National Association of Wine Retailers Applauds Alcohol Recommendations

January 7, 2026 (Washington, DC) — The National Association of Wine Retailers (NAWR) applauds the recently released “Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025–2030” for its adherence to the science on alcohol consumption. As with past releases of the Dietary Guidelines, the newest recommendations on alcohol consumption highlight the benefits of moderation over the unfounded and alarmist notion that there is “no safe level” of alcohol consumption.
“Americans deserve a balanced and unbiased approach to recommendations on alcohol consumption and this is exactly what we got today from the new Dietary Guidelines,’ said Dave Parker, president of the NAWR. “Moderate consumption has long been the foundation of the proper relationship with alcohol and we are very pleased to see that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services did not succumb to the call by extremist anti-alcohol groups to throw the idea of moderate consumption under the bus.”
The NAWR has long recommended that the moderate consumption of alcohol should be practiced not only by our members but by the American population at large. American alcohol beverage retailers have long been at the forefront of promoting a balanced approach to alcohol consumption.
ABOUT THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WINE RETAILERS
NAWR was founded in 2007 with the expressed purpose of advocating on behalf of modern wine retailers and helping reform a staid regulatory structure devised nearly a century ago. NAWR and its members believe a modern retail tier ought to reflect the needs and desires of 21st-century consumers and merchants, rather than the fears of early 20th-century politicians. NAWR serves its members with ongoing dissemination of critical information and member benefits, while also utilizing lobbying, education, and litigation to bring fairness to the alcohol regulatory system.
