Tommasi Family Estates Expands Portfolio with Ammura

Trailblazing Winemaking Family Captures the Soul of Etna with New Project

March 25, 2025 – Tommasi Family Estates, the renowned winemaking family from Valpolicella known for their dedication to terroir-driven wines, proudly announces their latest venture: Ammura, an exciting new estate on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. Located in Contrada Alboretto – Chiuse del Signore near Linguaglossa, the 15-hectare estate includes 5 hectares leased from Tenuta Chiuse del Signore of the Bambara – De Luca family, descendants of the historic Castrogiovanni lineage. Nestled at 570 meters above sea level in the Etna Natural Park, Ammura lies at the intersection of volcanic power and Mediterranean breeze, in a landscape as dramatic as it is fertile.

With Ammura, we continue our family’s journey of producing wines that are true to their origins; wines that reflect the history, soul, and unique character of the land. – says Pierangelo Tommasi, Executive Director of Tommasi Family Estates – Ammura is more than an estate: it is a new voice that narrates the story of Sicily through strength, depth, and mystery. Etna becomes the storyteller, a magnetic and enigmatic force that nourishes the vines with its fiery core, transferring its vital energy into every glass.

This project is the result of a powerful synergy: Etna’s ancestral essence meeting the winemaking heritage of the Tommasi family. The limited production reflects a focus on exclusivity and quality, ensuring wines with strong identity and authenticity.

The name Ammura comes from Arabic, meaning “beautiful, beloved, enchanting,” a tribute to Sicily’s rich cultural mosaic and a symbolic bridge to the family’s Venetian heritage.Etna itself plays a central role in Sicilian identity—not merely a volcano, but a maternal force known locally as “A’ Muntagna.” Ammura channels this feminine energy, interpreting Etna as an Enchantress—mysterious, powerful, and alive.

Ammura’s debut release includes two limited-production DOC winesEtna Rosso DOC (100% Nerello Mascalese – 10,300 bottles) and Etna Bianco DOC (100% Carricante – 12,500 bottles). Nerello Mascalese offers structure, minerality, and finesse, with aromas of red berries and spice. Carricante, Etna’s signature white, is crisp and saline, with bright acidity and great ageing potential. Etna’s volcanic soils and unique microclimate create ideal conditions for native varieties.

The labels feature bold imagery: prickly pear, dandelions with lava-like textures, capturing the elemental contrasts of the Etna landscape. “Etna is one of Italy’s most magnetic wine regions,” says Pierangelo Tommasi. “With Ammura, we’ve embraced its intensity and elegance. This is a tribute to the volcano’s voice—raw, refined, and deeply Italian.”

The estate also features a 1,500-square-meter winery, where careful vinification and ageing bring the volcanic character of Etna to life in every bottle. Each bottle of Ammura captures the essence of this rugged and intense land, translating it into a sensory experience rooted in identity and character.

With the acquisition of Ammura, the Tommasi family now manages 799 hectares of vineyards, strengthening their presence in some of Italy’s most prestigious wine-growing regions: from Valpolicella Classica to Montalcino, from Vulture to Lugana, and now, Etna. It is a journey that continues with the same spirit that started it all: passion, determination, and the desire to tell Italy’s story through the timeless language of wine.
