Crus Bourgeois du Médoc: A New Era Begins with 2025 Classification

February 13, 2025 – The much-anticipated 2025 Crus Bourgeois du Médoc classification was unveiled at Wine Paris, marking a pivotal moment for the renowned Bordeaux wine region. A total of 170 wines have received the prestigious classification, with 120 recognized as Crus Bourgeois, 36 awarded Crus Bourgeois Supérieur, and 14 wines distinguished as Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnel. “We have chosen to raise the selection criteria for the new classification” says Armelle Cruse, Vice-President of the Alliance des Crus Bourgeois. Released every five years, it sets a higher standard for quality, reflecting the evolution of the region and its commitment to excellence. The rigorous criteria and the new brand image aim to elevate the Crus Bourgeois brand on the international stage, reinforcing its reputation as a hallmark of superior Bordeaux wines.

The 2025 Crus Bourgeois du Médoc classification introduces a more rigorous selection process, starting with a blind tasting of the last five consecutive vintages of all wines that apply for ranking. This ensures a true reflection of each wine’s consistent quality over time. Also new this time, producers must demonstrate environmental certifications, reflecting their commitment to sustainability, no matter the classification level they are seeking. To achieve the Crus Bourgeois Supérieur or Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnel status, wines must meet an additional and demanding set of criteria. First, producers must have achieved higher levels of environmental certifications; the evaluation then extends to vineyard and cellar management and the harvest, vinification, bottling, labeling, and storage processes, all assessed for quality control. Beyond the technical aspects of production, the classification also considers the overall visitor experience, evaluating the quality of
public facilities and the hospitality offered to both professionals and consumers. The process further takes into account the winery’s efforts in self and collective promotion, distribution strategies, and the effectiveness of both national and international marketing campaigns. This multi-faceted approach ensures that the Crus Bourgeois du Médoc classification truly represents excellence, not just in the bottle, but in every aspect of wine production and brand development.

The Crus Bourgeois du Médoc classification holds significant value both for consumers and producers, serving as a trusted symbol of quality and accessibility. For consumers, the Crus Bourgeois sticker offers an assurance of exceptional taste and quality, acting as a reliable reference amidst the vast array of wines available in the marketplace. It simplifies the decision-making process for enthusiasts by providing a guarantee that each wine meets the highest standards for the price level. For producers, the classification serves as a powerful tool for continuous improvement. As the president of the jury, Philippe Faure-Brac puts it, “The classification enables the châteaux and estates to challenge themselves and constantly improve in order to produce balanced wines at the right price.” This drive for excellence not only benefits the producers themselves but also elevates the entire region, ensuring that the Crus Bourgeois du Médoc remains synonymous with quality, value, and innovation.

Wine lovers and industry professionals alike are invited to experience the exceptional quality and great value of the newly classified Crus Bourgeois du Médoc. Join us in celebrating the legacy and future of these distinguished Bordeaux wines, where tradition meets innovation.
