Monvera Glass Decoration: Creative Label Solutions for a Competitive Market

In today’s challenging marketplace, it’s imperative for a winery’s bottles to stand out on a crowded shelf when consumers walk into a store to purchase wine. Regular patrons and wine connoisseurs know where to find their favorite wines, but for those unsure of what wine to buy, the multitude of options can be overwhelming, and the final decision is often influenced by the label. To this end, creative bottle and label design is essential to successfully showcase wines — especially when targeting the younger generation of wine drinkers.

Monvera Glass Decoration is a leader in working with wineries and their designers to create eye-catching label solutions using two innovative processes — screen printing directly onto the surface of the bottle and spray coating. The latter process is when the bottle is sprayed with any color in different finishes, including opaque, transparent, translucent and frosted.

“We are the alternative to paper labels,” says Monvera’s COO, Caitriona Anderson. “It is an easy way to create a premium package without being terribly expensive. There are an infinite number of packages that you can make from these two processes and countless colors, finishes and design options.”

Unlike paper labels, which can tear, fade, or stain, screen printing is highly durable and allows for more creative use of the bottle’s surface. It removes the limitations of traditional dielines, enabling designers to craft unique and eye-catching labels on bottles of all shapes and styles. Screen printing supports innovative designs, such as 360 degree full-wrap prints and decorations on the bottle’s shoulders, maximizing the design’s visual impact. Additionally, neck printing can eliminate the need for a capsule, which has a positive environmental effect.

Anderson points out, “You can use screen printing regardless of the style of wine, the wine’s target audience and the price point. We often print traditional imagery of a vineyard with the winery in the background, but sometimes the artwork is just fun and playful.”

Working collaboratively with customers is central to Monvera Glass Decorations’ goals to foster lasting relationships. Monvera is excited about participating in the creative innovations designers can execute using screen printing and spray coating. At the Unified Expo, the Monvera team plans to share many of the changes these new processes have brought to their customers’ labels in the past year. Anderson explains, “One example is with frosting. Some customers ask us to frost the bottle first and then put a paper or UV label on it. We’ve also discovered that we can reverse that process by screen printing the label first with ceramic inks and then frosting over it, which produces a unique brushed effect. We’ve done that with precious metal inks, which makes the inks look brushed. We call it Brushed Metals.”
