New York, NY, December 4, 2024 – Champagne Bruno Paillard, an independent, family-owned maison known for its long-matured champagnes, announces the U.S. debut of Bruno Paillard Cuvée 72, a multi-vintage champagne that in effect is simultaneously old and new. The name references the 72-month (six-year) maturation period Cuvée 72 undergoes prior to release.
As with Champagne Bruno Paillard’s flagship Première Cuvée, Cuvée 72 is aged three years on the lees. Cuvée 72, however, spends a further three years in the cellar, versus six months for its younger multi-vintage sibling.
Imported by Massanois Fine Wines & Craft Spirits of New York, the suggested retail price for Cuvée 72 is $99 per bottle.
“Cuvée 72 is a more mature, complex version of our Première Cuvée,” explains Alice Paillard. “The floral, spicy, toasty aromas of an older wine that our buyers seek out are enhanced in Cuvee 72, yet at a price that remains competitive. Moreover, Cuvée 72 underlines the importance we attach to printing disgorgement dates on the back label – something Champagne Bruno Paillard was the first to innovate, beginning in the 1980s.”
More than half the fruit comes from Bruno Paillard’s own vineyards, and only first-press juice from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier (45%/33%/22%) is used, with 20% fermented in oak barrels. Subsequently, along with wines from the latest harvest, Cuvée 72 is blended via a solera-like system of reserve wines dating back as far as 1985. Over 30 wines, whose composition is kept secret, make up the final blend. Dosage for this Extra Brut champagne is less than 6 g/L.
As a wine with extra maturation, there is much to enjoy. To start with, citrus notes open gradually into white flowers (orange blossom, hawthorn, light acacia), followed by spice, saffron, and cedar wood. The creamy-textured palate displays slightly honeyed notes and dried fruits, as well as flavors of redcurrant jelly and black fruits.
