Porto, September 30th, 2024 – Kopke, the world’s oldest Port Wine House, is proud to announce a groundbreaking venture in wine tourism with the upcoming opening of the Tivoli Kopke Porto Gaia Hotel. Set to open in the first quarter of 2025, this unique establishment promises an unparalleled immersion into the world of Port wine, combining luxury hospitality with centuries of winemaking heritage.
A New Chapter in Wine Tourism
The Tivoli Kopke Porto Gaia Hotel, built above Kopke’s historic wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, offers wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs direct access to the heart of Port wine production. This innovative concept allows guests to experience Kopke’s rich history and craftsmanship, established in 1638 while enjoying modern luxury accommodations.
Pedro Braga, CEO of Sogevinus, Kopke’s parent company, comments: “This project represents a fusion of our centuries-old winemaking tradition with contemporary hospitality. Guests will have the unique opportunity to sleep above barrels of aging Port, connecting them intimately with our heritage.”
Gastronomy Meets Oenology
The hotel’s fine-dining restaurant, helmed by a soon-to-be-announced renowned chef, will feature a menu meticulously crafted to complement Kopke’s extensive Port wine collection. The wine bar and rooftop lounge will offer panoramic views of the Douro River and Porto’s historic center, providing the perfect backdrop for wine appreciation.
Braga states: “This collaboration with Tivoli Hotels & Resorts allows us to elevate the wine tourism experience. We’re not just offering a place to stay; we’re inviting wine lovers to live and breathe the world of Port wine.”
A New Era for Wine Tourism
The hotel’s proximity to Porto’s historic center and the Douro Valley wine region makes it an ideal base for exploring Portugal’s rich wine heritage. With this innovative project, Kopke reaffirms its commitment to preserving and promoting the culture of Port wine while setting a new standard for wine tourism globally.
“We see this as an opportunity to share our passion for Port wine with a broader audience,” adds Braga. “From the casual wine enthusiast to the seasoned sommelier, everyone will find something to enrich their wine experience here.”
Kopke owns not only the new five-star hotel but also The Vine House, which is situated in the Cima Corgo subregion near Pinhão and is part of Quinta de São Luiz. The wine tourism project, which includes 11 rooms, a signature restaurant, and an infinity pool with a view of the Douro, was opened in 2022.
