Wine, Sustainability: Crealis Launches “Symbiosis” the Paper-Based Sparkling Foil

Revealed for the first time at Luxe Pack in Monaco:
The next & green generation of sustainable closure solutions.

(CREALIS GROUP HEADQUARTERS, Bodio Lomnago, Italy, 26 September 2024) – Paper is rewriting sustainability in wine packaging. After several years of research and development, Crealis unveils its new generation of foils, primarily made from FSC-certified paper combined with aluminum. Plastic is disappearing from sparkling foils being replaced by paper, now at the forefront of a new green generation of closure solutions.

Symbiosis, coming from two Greek words: “syn” (together) and “bios” (life), meaning “living together” highlights the close and long-term interaction between two added value materials: PAPER & ALUMINUM.

Symbiosis foils will be showcased for the first time in the coming weeks at Luxe Pack in Monaco (30/9-02/10) and later, in different European and extra European events.

“This product is extraordinary not only for the quality of its materials,” explains Michele Moglia, CEO of Crealis, the international group for closure solutions, “but also because it is the first sparkling foil primarily made of paper and available on an industrial scale, using existing bottling lines. Symbiosis is sustainable and feasible- a concrete solution now available to the market. Like all our products, Symbiosis is highly customizable and compatible with automatic bottling lines.” This makes it an accessible solution that reflects the Group’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Symbiosis departs from the traditional three-layer structure of sparkling foils (Alu/PE/ Alu). Thanks to its innovative composition of 48% paper and 44% aluminum, and its European Recycling Code C/PAP82, it can be disposed of in paper trash bins across Europe after use or collected with paper waste.

Symbiosis ensures a CO2 reduction of 30%*1 if compared to an equivalent foil made from Derma75 or -15%*2 if compared to the latest evolution named Derma75 L (already reducing CO2).

In addition, Crealis Group is pleased to announce that its near-term science-based greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets, aligned with the 1.5°C pathway, have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The targets are as follows:

  • Crealis S.p.A. commits to reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030, using 2022 as the base year.
  • Crealis S.p.A. also commits to reducing absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 25% within the same timeframe.

In this context, Crealis is also advancing its Green Tech line with green product upgrades, such as Derma75L and PET+, as well as significant infrastructure investments, like the plants for the recovery of solvents now operational at both Enoplastic site, in Italy and at Rivercap site in Spain.

*Independent Life Cycle Assessment (cradle to gate – data collection year 2023 – production at Crealis S.p.A. Bodio Lomnago, Italy) with methodological support from Deloitte in 2024. This assessment compares Derma 75 Premium foli*1 and Derma 75L Premium foil*2 with Symbiosis* Foil with paper top, using a standard size Premium sparkling foil (diameter 34mm, taper 1/8, length 120mm). The focus is on the Global Warming Potential (GWP), specifically analyzing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions through the IPCC 2021 GWP100 model, which includes CO2 uptake.
