German Wines’ Sustainability on Display at Global Citizen Festival in NYC on Sept. 28

September 25, 2024 — On Saturday, September 28, Wines of Germany will be the sole wine region featured at the annual Global Citizen Festival in New York City’s Central Park. Culminating the UN General Assembly in NYC, the Global Citizen Festival calls on world and corporate leaders to Defeat Poverty, Defend the Planet and Demand Equity.

Germany is widely considered to be one of the world’s most environmentally conscious nations, with a long history of organic farming and technological innovation. In fact, organic vineyards in Germany have increased by 100% since 2007 and about 300% since 2000.

But this commitment to sustainability goes beyond just winemaking: the German government has also agreed to transition 30% of all agricultural land to organic farming by 2030; this is higher than the EU’s agenda which outlines a goal of 25%.

So next time you are looking for sustainable wines – look to Germany! Here are a few suggestions from four of Germany’s 13 outstanding winemaking regions – also served at the Global Citizen Festival this weekend:

  • Dr. Loosen Riesling ‘Dr. L’ 2023, Mosel
  • Loewen Riesling Estate 2021, Mosel
  • Karthäuserhof Riesling ‘Schieferkristall’ Trocken 2021, Mosel
  • Georg Breuer Riesling Lorch Trocken 2019, Rheingau
  • Fio Riesling ‘Rätzelhaft’ Trocken 2018, Mosel
  • Villa Wolf Pinot Noir Rosé 2023, Pfalz
  • Freiherr von Gleichenstein Pinot Noir 2018, Baden
  • Prost Pinot Noir 2022, Pfalz
