Sept. 3, 2024 (Calistoga, CA) – Parable Wines (https://www.parablewines.com/) — a Calistoga-based winery, in only its fourth year making wine — has secured a five-year contract to purchase Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the iconic Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville. To Kalon is considered perhaps the most renowned vineyard in Napa Valley, whose grapes produce some of the greatest wines from California.
The 2021 vintage marked the first Cabernets released by Parable, which included bottlings from the highly regarded Beckstoffer Vineyard, Vangone (proximate to Atlas Peak/Pritchard Hill), and Chardonnays from Hyde & Sons (Napa Carneros), Antinori Antica (Atlas Peak), and Ritchie Creek (Dry Creek Valley). Parable will also be making Cabs from Lawrence Wine Estates Trailside Vineyard (Rutherford), and a Syrah from Bald Mountain Vineyard (Mount Veeder).
The agreement with Beckstoffer, one of California’s most seminal grape growers, calls for up to five tons per vintage. “This continues our vision of making world class wines from the greatest vineyards in Northern California,” said Parable’s Managing Partner Trey Eppright. “Everyone has heard of Napa Valley – it’s an icon – and some of those people might have heard of To Kalon; perhaps it’s one of the only vineyard names people of heard about.”
According to Beckstoffer’s 2024 vintage report, released in July, “The growing season at To Kalon Vineyard has been exceptional. With a long, wet, dormant season followed by a mild and modest spring, our vines are thriving as we transition into the heat of summer. Here’s what’s happening in the vineyard right now: This year, we’ve enjoyed ideal weather conditions. The early season rains have provided ample water reserves, and the moderate spring temperatures have set the stage for healthy vine growth. As the temperature steadily increases with the summer sun, we have seen a stable progression in ripening that is well-balanced with cool, breezy nights, promising a classic California vintage.”
To Kalon is situated on a gentle slope up towards the Mayacamas Mountains in Oakville. The slope consists on an alluvial fan created by the deposition of sediments transported in various streams from the mountain down to the bottom of the valley. Soils comprise gravelly loam, while the climate is warm, tempered by the coastal fog sweeping up the valley from San Pablo Bay late in the afternoon, which lowers the temperature.
