Oregon Winery Wins 6 Gold Medals and Platinum for Specialty Grüner Veltliner Aged with Imported Austrian Cask

ROSEBURG, Ore., July 17, 2024 — Umpqua Valley winery Reustle-Prayer Rock Vineyards has recently been awarded 6 Gold Medals and a Platinum (95 Points) for its new Grüner Veltliner Cask #2, a rare specialty wine aged in an Austrian white oak cask. The timber was sourced from the foothills of the Alps and constructed by the Schneckenleitner Cooperage of Lower Austria.

Among the other awards were the Gold-winning 2023 Grüner Veltliner Green-Lizard and 2023 Grüner Veltliner Estate; the former being made to rival the ‘Smaragd’ style of Austria’s Wachau, and the latter akin to ‘Federspiel’ wines. Reustle was additionally awarded Gold Medals for their 2022 Estate Tempranillo, the off-dry 2022 Riesling ‘Enigma’, and a 2022 ‘Deux Vine’… a Bordeaux-style blend of Merlot and Malbec.

The Critics Challenge is held annually in San Diego by Director Rich Cook, who employs the expertise of wine judges from various sectors of the wine industry, including winemakers, wine journalists, consultants, educators, hospitality professionals, sommeliers, and wine directors. The competition aims to evaluate and promote wines not only produced within California, but also to showcase growing regions around the globe.
