The Decanter World Wine Awards are recognised as the world’s largest and most influential wine competition and Penny’s Hill was judged by global experts as #1 Grenache out of 18,000 wines from all over the world. An amazing achievement for Penny’s Hill, McLaren Vale Grenache and Australia.

Penny’s Hill Chief Winemaker and General Manager Alexia Roberts expressed her excitement for the accolade.

“We’re thrilled with the timing of this recognition as Penny’s Hill enters a new chapter, adding new wines to the collection and featuring contemporary packaging highlighting the iconic Penny’s Hill red spot.” says Roberts.

Since assuming the role of Chief Winemaker for Penny’s Hill in 2013 and later becoming the General Manager in 2022, Alexia Roberts has played a pivotal role in shaping the brand’s direction. Guided by Executive Chairman and Proprietor Warren Randall of Randall Wine Group, which acquired Penny’s Hill Estate in 2022. Roberts is impressed with the absolute purity of fruit nurtured by these ancient vines, the Yeenunga vineyard, which is one of the best single vineyard sites in McLaren Vale.

Randall exclaimed, “I have admired the consistent excellence of the Penny’s Hill range of wines for over 30 years, but every now and again, Penny’s Hill and McLaren Vale stun the world of wine!”

The 2023 Penny’s Hill ‘Yeenunga’ Single Vineyard Grenache marks a debut release of a new collection of wines sourced from iconic estate vineyards. The 51-year-old bush vine Grenache, planted in a horseshoe contour, sits at an elevation of 170m, the site offers panoramic views of McLaren Vale and St Vincent’s Gulf of South Australia.

Another outstanding result at the Decanter World Wine Awards for Penny’s Hill was the gold medal received by the 2022 Penny’s Hill ‘Edwards Road’ Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

Randall continued, “This isn’t the first time the wines of Penny’s Hill have been recognised on a global stage.

First, Penny’s Hill was awarded the “World’s Best Cabernet” with the 2014 Penny’s Hill ‘Edwards Road’ Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Now, Penny’s Hill has received the “Best in Show” accolade at the Decanter World Wine Awards, for the 2023 Penny’s Hill ‘Yeenunga’ Single Vineyard Grenache.
