Sangiacomo Vineyards Celebrates 25 Years of Roberts Road Vineyard

May 23, 2024 (Sonoma County, CA) — Sangiacomo Family Vineyards, a leader in sustainable grape growing in Sonoma County, proudly marks the 25th anniversary of their esteemed Roberts Road Vineyard, in the Petaluma Gap AVA.  The Sangiacomo family is pleased to invite guests to celebrate this milestone of Roberts Road Vineyard during a special 25th Anniversary Event, which will take place at the vineyard on June 23, 2024, at 11:00 am.

Farming since 1927, the Sangiacomo family continues to honor their family’s tradition of farming shoulder-to-shoulder across generations, growing premium winegrapes across 1,600 acres of vineyards in Sonoma County, selling to over 80 wineries in Napa and Sonoma.  All of the family’s 14 vineyards are certified sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA). Among these, Roberts Road Vineyard stands out as one of the family’s most prized sites.

Established in 1999, the 130-acre Roberts Road Vineyard is located in Penngrove, at the base of Sonoma Mountain at the northern edge of the Petaluma Gap. Initially an open pasture, the land was developed into a vineyard by the Sangiacomo family, where they saw amazing promise for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.  The land was discovered by Angelo Sangiacomo, on one of his many Sunday drives through Sonoma County. This vineyard represents the “passing of the torch” from one generation to the next as Angelo’s sons, Mike and Steve, were heavily involved in the vineyard development, including selections of varieties, clones and rootstocks. As the vineyard continued to gain acclaim, Angelo would often say “the kids passed the test” sharing his approval for the lessons and skills passed on to the next generation.

As one of the first vineyards in this undiscovered part of the Petaluma Gap AVA, this pioneering move inspired more grapegrowers to plant new vineyards in this particular area.  Along with other neighboring vineyards such as Gap’s Crown, planted a few years after, Roberts Road continued to garner the acclaim to establish the Petaluma Gap as a world-renowned growing region.

“When we first looked at this land, we were enamored with its potential, a site undiscovered in one of the cooler parts of Sonoma County.” explains Steve Sangiacomo, third-generation partner at Sangiacomo Family Vineyards. “After doing our due diligence of analysis, resulting in soil reports of almost perfection, a climate study that showed it would test our patience with an extremely long growing season, we were all in to create a vineyard of excellence that would match our hope.  And boy did it ever. Along with our own family brand, we are proud of 30+ other wineries who source fruit from this vineyard, many vineyard designated. Needless to say, seeing Roberts Road Vineyard become a standard for excellence in the Petaluma Gap AVA has been incredibly rewarding, and we can’t wait to see how this vineyard continues to shine in the decades ahead.”

Part of what makes Roberts Road Vineyard so special is that it enjoys a longer than average growing season, which allows the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, creating exceptional balance. Also, Copeland Creek runs through the property and over centuries has deposited alluvials and rock creating ideal soil composition. Wines made from this vineyard are quintessentially Burgundian in style, and recognized for their elegant character, balanced earth and fruit notes, and smooth, supple mouthfeel. Featuring multiple clonal selections and rootstock combinations, this Certified Sustainable vineyard remains among the most sought-after sites cultivated by the Sangiacomo family.

To celebrate this milestone, the Sangiacomo family is pleased to invite guests for a rare and exclusive visit to the Roberts Road Vineyard with Steve and Mike Sangiacomo, Mia Sangiacomo Pucci, and winemaker James MacPhail on Sunday, June 23rd at 11am. The afternoon will include a walking tour of notable vineyard blocks, a look into the unique influences of the site, and a seated, guided wine tasting followed by a BBQ wine country lunch. Tickets are $150 per person and can be purchased online. Visit www.sangiacomowines.com to learn more.
