April 18, 2024 (Santa Rosa, Calif.) – Jennifer “JB” Kelly, President of Sales and Marketing for Luxury Wine Partners in San Rafael, Calif., has been named Honorary Chief Judge for the upcoming Sunset International Wine Competition, which takes place May 20-23, 2024, in Sonoma County, Calif.
Sponsored by Western lifestyle brand and publication Sunset, the contest is expected to welcome more than 3,000 individual entries this year. “It’s an honor,” says Kelly of the recognition. “As the Chief judge, it’s my aim to ensure the integrity, fairness, and professionalism of the judging process. I can provide guidance and mentorship to fellow judges, ensuring consistency and objectivity in our assessments.”
She continues, “It’s crucial for me to uphold the reputation and credibility of the competition, while also fostering a collaborative and respectful environment among judges. Ultimately, my goal is to maintain the highest standards of excellence and to recognize and celebrate outstanding wines deserving of recognition.”
Kelly is a wine and spirits leader with more than 15 years of experience in sales, marketing and public relations. She is a certified sommelier and a wine judge, with a passion for learning and sharing her knowledge of the industry. “Judges play such an important role in the success of the wine industry, but they often go unmentioned,” says Debra Del Fiorentino, owner of Wine Competitions Management & Productions (WCMP), which presents the Sunset International Wine Competition.
“JB was chosen [as Honorary Chief Judge] because she looks through every wine carefully and many times,” explains Del Fiorentino. “She remains professional, yet totally fun throughout the entire judging process.”
Judging, says Kelly, is rewarding work, because, “Being able to contribute to the recognition of so many outstanding wines and provide valuable feedback to winemakers and consumers is truly gratifying.”
Kelly, who has judged the Sunset Competition since its revival in 2019, adds, “The caliber of wines entered in the Sunset wine competition has left a lasting impression on me. I am truly impressed by the wide array of styles, varieties and quality of winemaking showcased, each reflecting incredible style and unique terroir characteristics. It’s clear that winemakers have poured their heart and soul into producing wines of exceptional quality; it’s evident in every sip. The competition serves as a testament to the richness and diversity of the wine industry, underscoring its vibrant and ever-evolving nature.”
