Lake County, California, January 2024 — Effective immediately the biodynamically farmed wines of Hawk and Horse Vineyards are now represented in eight new markets—Bermuda, Canada (Ontario), Connecticut, southern California, Montana, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Texas. “We are delighted to make our wines available to several markets new to us,” said Mitch Hawkins, founder.

The new distributors and brokers are launching with the 2019 vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Block Three Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Franc as well as the 2014 vintage of Latigo (a Cabernet-based port-style wine), all originating from Hawk and Horse’s estate vineyard in the Red Hills appellation of Lake County.

  • Vinexx represents the winery in Ontario (Canada) and Bermuda.
  • VinWest is the new broker for southern California.
  • Highland Imports now represents the winery in Connecticut.
  • Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits now represents the brand in Nevada and Texas.
  • Summit Beverage represents the winery in Montana.
  • Vintage Imports represents the winery in Pennsylvania.

“Wines like this, which express an elegance as well as the uniqueness of their mountain terroir, are highly sought-after,” explains Frank Finnegan, Fine Wine Sales Manager of Summit Beverage. “We seek to offer the very best from around the globe to our region. With proven quality, vintage after vintage, dedication to regenerative farming practices, and hands-on attention to every detail by the founding family, we’re excited to bring these excellent wines to western Montana.” he adds.

The distributors are launching with 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Block Three, 2019 Petite Sirah, 2019 Petite Verdot, 2014 Latigo and 2021 Sparkling Rose of Cabernet Sauvignon.

All of the wines are sourced from Hawk and Horse’s estate vineyard in the Red Hills appellation of Lake County. Hawk and Horse Vineyards is a family-owned and family-operated vineyard and ranch which practices biodynamic viticulture. The first release was 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon.

A visit to Hawk and Horse Vineyards is a step back in time, to the white-fence-bordered pastures full of horses, a charming home-turned-tasting room with an antique Victorian bar, historic photos of the property and local memorabilia. Recently the California State Fair awarded Hawk and Horse Vineyards a Certificate of Excellence in Viticulture. David Boies, Christopher Boies, Mitch and Tracey Hawkins and the Boies Family are the proprietors of Hawk and Horse Vineyards. Mitch and Tracey farm the estate vineyard and are recognized as some of the leading biodynamic viticulturists in California.

The winery farms 18 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot. The vineyards straddle slopes from a 15% grade to 85%, at elevations up to 2,200 feet, situated in the Red Hills AVA of California.” An unusual aspect most visitors comment on is that the soil literally glitters, due to the abundance of Lake County “diamonds,” tiny silica fragments which are the remnants of volcanic activity from the Mayacama and Vaca volcanic mountain ranges and nearby Mt. Konocti, a now dormant volcano. “Our family feels that a biodynamic approach brings you a wine which is a true expression of our sense of place,” explain Tracey and Mitch Hawkins. Hawk and Horse Vineyards has been Demeter-certified since 2008 and California Certified Organic (CCOF) since 2004.

The ranch is home to a small herd of Scottish Highland cattle as well as the horses and an enormous range of wildlife—from Red Tail hawks to bees, owls, bear, wild boar, bobcats, mountain lions and squirrels. Bird-watching brings glimpses of woodpeckers, bluebirds, herons, ducks and more. The property includes a plaque documenting the historical location of El Roble Grande, the largest Valley Oak ever recorded in California.
