A to Z Wineworks’ Artist-in-Residence Program Folds Art into Winery and Community Life

Newberg, Oregon (January 9, 2024) A to Z Wineworks is pleased to announce their 2023-2024 Artist-in-Residence, Krystyny Vandenberg.

Vandenberg works with painting and textiles, exploring the significance and difficulties of forming relationships with family, friends, and identity. She received her BFA in studio arts with an emphasis in drawing and painting from Biola University in 2017, then went on to receive her MFA at Otis College of Art and Design in 2022. Her work has been exhibited throughout California and internationally and is currently held in collections at Biola University and the Municipal of Redondo, Portugal. In 2018, she was artist in residence in Redondo.  She painted the people there using materials found around town and from the local archaeological dig site.

As part of her residency with A to Z Wineworks, Vandenberg worked the 2023 harvest season, getting firsthand experience learning about winemaking. Over the course of this year, she will craft new artworks while continuing to engage with the winery staff as they help craft this vintage’s wine. For this period, Vandenberg will explore the intersection of people, place and history, imbuing newfound insight to winemaking into her pieces. A selection of Vandenberg’s work will be on display as she completes her residency both at the winery and in the gallery at the Chehalem Cultural Center in Newberg during September and October.

Applications for A to Z Wineworks’ fifth Artist-in-Residence will be open in Spring 2024. The 15-month immersion program offers the opportunity to work and respond artistically over the course of a full vintage. The Artist-in-Residence initially joins the seasonal harvest crew that A to Z recruits each year, now boasting 290 alumni from 20 countries. Following the initial harvest, the Artist-in-Residence receives support from A to Z and access to staff and properties for a year of artistic reflection and creation. During the residency’s second harvest, time is split between winery and artistic work. The residency concludes with a public showcase of some of the year’s work through a gallery showing, lecture, reading, and/or performance.
