Suavia’s Massifitti White Veronese IGT

September 29th 2023, Soave (Verona) – ITALY Massifitti, white Veronese IGT from Suavia, is a sincere expression of Trebbiano di Soave. The grapes come from south-facing soil at an elevation of 300 meters. The name Massifitti describes the volcanic soil of this area particularly rich in large compact basaltic rocks. The vineyard was planted in 2006 using clones of old Trebbiano di Soave vines selected by the Agricultural University of Milan. This wine matures for 15 months in contact with the lees, and then ages in the bottle for 12 months.

“This is a historic and almost forgotten grape variety, often misunderstood and confused, – they say at Suavia – the result of a long search at the roots of this variety to rediscover its character and identity. Born and bred on the basaltic soils of Fittà, it is a tribute to our land and its history, of which we feel to be the custodians.”

It has a bright straw yellow color, and on the nose citrus and sweet spices extend over mineral tones and marine perceptions. The palate is crisp and vertical. Lively acidity combines with an elegant, creamy structure and it has a long, savory finish. It pairs well with appetizers and first courses of vegetables and fish. Excellent with oysters and raw seafood.

Trebbiano is a less productive grape variety than Garganega and requires more care and attention. Precisely because of the “demanding management” in the 1960s and 1970s it was gradually abandoned by many winemakers. Its cluster ripens earlier than that of Garganega and is more compact and more sensitive to biotic agents. Trebbiano yields wines of great structure and good grade. At the aromatic level it is more delicate than Garganega. It is long-lived and suitable for aging, developing mineral notes typical of these volcanic areas.
