A Growing Trend Propels Food and Wine Pairing Experiences to New Heights

SAN FRANCISCO — California wine country destinations not only offer visitors a chance to taste world-class wines at the source; they are also home to some of the state’s most exciting culinary offerings. In recent years, wineries throughout California have taken that pairing to the next level by hiring resident chefs — including many who formerly worked for acclaimed restaurants — to create elevated culinary experiences for winery visitors. Many such programs incorporate fresh produce grown in winery gardens or sourced from local farmers.

“There are definitely more chefs doing it now,” notes Cakebread Cellars resident chef Brian Streeter. “There’s much more of an interest from wineries in having a culinary program to offer their guests.”

Streeter joined Cakebread in 1989 and has seen California’s food and wine pairing programs evolve over the decades to become more sophisticated. “Tasting room experiences were pretty straightforward when I moved to the Napa Valley,” he says. “The expectation of the customer is much greater now and the experiences are more varied.”

As top-tier chefs continue to gravitate to California wineries, guests can experience an array of sophisticated fare created to pair perfectly with the state’s renowned wines.

“We wanted to create a greater platform for conversations around food and experiences,” says chef Preeti Mistry of J Vineyards. “Shifting the Lens is our guest chef series that showcases people, cuisines and flavors that have historically been overlooked by traditional winery culinary and pairing programs. This year, we’re working with chefs and menus that incorporate Vietnamese, Mexican and Indian influences, highlighting the versatility of pairing our wines with these diverse flavors.”

Here is just a sampling of wineries across California that regularly offer elevated food and wine experiences created by in-house chefs. Menus often change with the seasons, so check winery websites for the latest details. To find additional food-friendly wineries, use the Winery Finder search tool at DiscoverCaliforniaWines.
