Consorzio per la Tutela dell’Asti has chosen Platinum Media, a New York-based PR and Marketing agency, to launch its communication plan in the US market.

March 30th – Officially established in 1932, Consorzio dell’Asti works for the protection, enhancement, and promotion of Asti Spumante DOCG and Moscato d’Asti DOCG, which are among the bubbles most used for toasting around the world today. A pride of Italian viticulture and oenology, Asti DOCG is favored by a special environment of origin and processed using a method introduced and perfected in Piedmont, transferring all the varietal aromas to the product in the bottle.

Asti Spumante DOCG and Moscato d’Asti DOCG come from Moscato Bianco grapes, a variety that grows in the Piedmont regions of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato. Nestled between the Ligurian coast and the Alps, these three areas are characterized by an ideal climate and position, allowing grapevines to flourish, and letting the grapes express their aromatic properties to the fullest. This results in an autochthonous Piedmonts varietal whose musky aroma, intense but extremely refined, blends into a fragrant bouquet of botanical essences, such as wisteria, lime flowers, peach, apricot, and delicate hints of lemon and orange blossoms.

The origin of Asti dates back to 1865, when producer Carlo Gancia, after learning vinification techniques in the Champagne region of France, introduced the “Classic Method” to Moscato Bianco grapes, resulting in making what is considered the first Italian spumante. 30 years later in 1898, Federico Martinotti, the Director of the Experimental Institute of Oenology of Asti, invented a second approach to production. The “Martinotti Method” is a quick sparkling wine fermentation process that uses large, pressurized tanks; this development made production less expensive and easier to manage by spumante makers and allowed for the development of Moscato d’Asti.

The Consorzio’s members’ hard work and dedication to their vineyards has led them to numerous significant recognitions. In 1967, Asti was awarded the DOC designation, which was the highest accolade an Italian wine could have at the time and was later conferred the DOCG designation (Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin) in 1993. UNESCO subsequently recognized the vineyard landscapes of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato as World Heritage sites, thus protecting 5 distinct wine-growing areas. These sites encompass a breathtaking landscape of rolling hills blanketed by rows of grapevines, ancient hamlets, farmsteads and wineries, medieval castles, and towers. The UNESCO recognition also honors the heritage of the Moscato Bianco growers and Asti winemakers who created an economic system that respects and preserves the land for future generations.

In 2022, in honor of its 90th anniversary, the Consorzio launched a new rebrand that demonstrates their goal to reach younger generations while preserving its unique heritage and core values.

Notes on the wines:

  • ASTI SPUMANTE DOCG: Asti Spumante, like the grapes it is made from, has a fresh aroma, rich with floral fragrances and notes of ripe fruit. Notable accents of its bouquet include acacia, wisteria, orange, and bergamot flowers, as well as hints of sage and lemon. The color is straw yellow. The bubbles, tiny and lasting, penetrate the nose and palate with sweet intensity. The grapes are refrigerated at zero degrees until they reach a second fermentation; a process that can be accomplished either according to the “Martinotti Method” or the the complex “Classico Method.” Recently, the range of residual sugars has been expanded from traditional sweet to extra dry, from brut to pas dosé.
  • MOSCATO D’ASTI DOCG: An inimitable aroma, balance, and natural sweetness, together with a limited alcohol content, make Moscato d’Asti one of a kind. Its bouquet is rich and intense, emanating sensations reminiscent of acacia flowers, wisteria, orange, and mountain honey, with an undertone of spice and notes of elderberry, yarrow, and bergamot flowers. In terms of production, this wine differs from Asti Spumante because its fermentation is halted when the alcohol content reaches about 5% by volume, with a lower pressure that makes it a uniquely vivacious sparkling wine.
