The “Cheers to Joe & Jolene” program supports the protection of endangered species through Wine By Joe retail sales in March and April

Portland, Oregon (March 1, 2023) – Wine By Joe announced today the official start of its partnership with the Oregon Zoo Foundation timed with the wine brand’s 20th anniversary. The “Cheers to Joe & Jolene” program honors Oregon Zoo resident, Jolene, a baby orangutan, on her first birthday.

From March 1 to April 30, 2023, a portion of the retail sales of Wine By Joe’s popular Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris wines will be shared with the Oregon Zoo Foundation, with funds directed to both Jolene’s care and the Oregon Zoo’s larger conservation efforts around the world.

While Jolene is in great hands with her mother Kitra and the Oregon Zoo’s dedicated care team, orangutans are critically endangered, largely because of habitat loss driven by logging and the conversion of forests into palm oil plantations. Around 90% of the world’s palm oil is produced on the only two islands where orangutans live – the Southeast Asian islands of Borneo and Sumatra. When orangutans lose their habitat, they also become easy targets for hunters, who often capture young orangutans for the illegal pet trade.

The name “orangutan” comes from the Malay “orang,” meaning man, and “hutan,” meaning forest or jungle. Orangutans share nearly 98% of their DNA with humans, making them some of the Oregon Zoo’s visitors’ most beloved residents. The Oregon Zoo supports the Borneo-based Hutan-Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Program, which works to research, protect and reduce human-wildlife conflict for species including orangutans and elephants.

Jolene fans have a delicious way to support her species’ care in the “Cheers to Joe & Jolene” program.

“We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate our company’s 20th anniversary than with a charitable partnership impacting wildlife conservation efforts,” said Sarah Pearson, CEO of Wine By Joe and partner brand Dobbes Family Estate. “As an agriculture-based business, we know intimately the importance of environmental preservation. We proudly toast both Wine By Joe’s 20th and Jolene’s first birthdays together and are honored to support her future care.”

Through April 30, wine consumers across Oregon should be on the lookout for Wine By Joe Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris at grocery stores, wine retailers, and online wine stores. In some areas, participating Wine By Joe wines will be adorned with bright yellow “Cheers to Joe & Jolene” neck tags for easy identification and a QR code linking to orangutan education and the Oregon Zoo Foundation’s online donation portal.

“It takes a tremendous amount of resources to care for so many animals and to advocate for endangered species,” said Foundation Executive Director Julie Fitzgerald. “And this is an exciting way to support our beloved zoo–including Jolene–while enjoying delicious local wines.”
