Sustainability-focused winery also receives the Water Management Award and two Commendations
Mendoza, Argentina, Dec. 8, 2022 — Terrazas de los Andes, a pioneer of high-altitude winegrowing since the early 1990s, is honored to announce that founder and estate director Hervé Birnie-Scott was named “Green Personality of the Year” at The Drinks Business Green Awards 2022. The winery also received the Water Management Award and two Commendations: for The Amorim Biodiversity Award and for The VinLog Green Packaging Award with Terrazas de los Andes Reserva Malbec.
“At Terrazas de los Andes, we have long recognized that the conservation of this fragile Andean ecosystem is a sacred responsibility, as is our commitment to our local community,” says Birnie-Scott. “Every member of our team works every day to protect this magic at the top of the world, so this is a team victory. It is incredibly gratifying to receive these recognitions of our efforts across multiple sustainability categories.”
The Drinks Business created the Green Awards to “…celebrate those brands and individuals that do so much more than simply pay lip service to sustainability. Instead, our 2022 winners have showed extraordinary commitment and creativity this year in putting the green agenda at the heart of their businesses, extending it to every possible corner and crevice.”
Terrazas’ “Guardians of Mountain Life” project is a multi-pronged program that is committed to a wide range of practices including regenerative and organic viticulture, conserving precious glacier water, supporting biodiversity, reducing the company’s carbon footprint from vineyard to winery to packaging, education and support for the local community, and providing safety and opportunity to employees.

“We are always striving to improve,” notes Birnie-Scott. “For example: while we started using drip irrigation to save water 30 years ago, today we have added precision field data analysis that allows us to provide exactly the water that the plant needs. This alone means we are saving more than 4 million square meters of water per year. There is always more to do and we are continuing to explore.”
About Terrazas de los Andes
An adventurous pioneer of high-altitude winegrowing since the early 1990s, Terrazas de los Andes farms a breathtaking mosaic of 200+ individual high-altitude wine terraces, perched in the mountains where the earth meets the sky. Using 100% estate-grown mountain fruit, irrigated precisely and sustainably with pristine glacier water, Terrazas wines are full-bodied but elegantly aromatic and bright, capturing the pure, fresh taste of the Andes from these high-risk but high-reward elevations that require extreme viticulture. With respect for nature front and center, Terrazas’ Guardians of Mountain Life project aims to unleash and protect the magic at the top of the world—embracing regenerative and organic viticulture, conserving precious glacier water, and supporting the local Andean community and the winery’s own employees.
