About the brand: Carmelo and Asani approached the launch of VII(N) The Seventh Estate with the utmost sincerity and respect for wine both as an art form and as an industry. The inaugural vintage blend, Oath of Fidelity, is a flavorful, yet subtle, 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wine invokes the heritage of the old world while committing to modern philosophies of winemaking for the next generation of wine lovers. Throughout out all of his endeavors, Carmelo is constantly breaking barriers in an effort to achieve equal representation across all sectors for the BIPOC community, and with this newest venture, he aims to expand the presence of people of color within the wine community.
About the name: The debut vintage from VII(N) The Seventh Estate is the 2017 Oath of Fidelity Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The name Oath of Fidelity is in reference to and in honor of General Toussaint Louverture. Carmelo and Asani identify strongly with Toussaint’s story and how he broke down barriers in his path and fought for the freedom of his people and his country, revolutionizing history. He transformed a “rebellion” into a revolutionary moment for his people to take an oath to support their freedom at the risk of their lives (oath of fidelity). With VII(N), they wanted to bring his legacy to life by creating a new Oath, and bring a fresh perspective to the traditional wine industry by merging the old world to the new world together to truly enjoy wine drinking.
About the blend: Eighty-year-old vines of Grenache from a site adjacent to the legendary vineyard of La Crau provide the heart for Oath of Fidelity. These vines are farmed and harvested by hand with only the best clusters selected for this limited 200-case bottling. The wines are fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeast and aged for two years in a combination of concrete and large oak barrels. With subtle notes of cherries, lavender, sage and peppercorns, combined with blonde tobacco and dried tea leaves, this nuanced and enchanting blend lends itself to becoming the newest infatuation among wine enthusiasts and laypersons, alike. The full-bodied red, with firm tannins formulated with flavors of smoked meats, dried fruits and river stones, is perfect for a quiet night at home or a night out on the town. The varietal is 90% Grenache, 10% Mouvedre.
