This is the first field blend from the winery, which will join its food-forward Fifth Moon label.

NAPA VALLEY, Calif., September 28, 2022 – RD Winery, Napa’s first Vietnamese-owned winery, releases its new Fifth Moon Stampede Vineyard Field Blendmostly made with Zinfandel, Mourvedre, Mission and Alicante Bouchet grapes, all originally planted, grown and harvested from the registered historic vineyard in California and fermented as one. Made by head winemaker Timothy Milos, RD Winery produced only 30 cases, and the wine is now available in the winery’s tasting room and online.

“We chose to harvest from Stampede Vineyard for our first field blend because the site itself is unique, where a long-forgotten vineyard now produces some of the state’s most distinctive Zinfandels, but is also scattered with Mission, Grenache and others,” says Mailynh Phan, RD Winery CEO. “There’s a lot of history there, yet the style of fruit feels entirely new.”

The vintage joins RD Winery’s Fifth Moon collection, which features off-the-beaten-path sources and easy-drinking varieties, each crafted to pair with a range of cuisines and lifestyles. With a bright, fruity and juicy style, and flavor notes of fresh strawberries, cherry Jolly Rancher, bramble, cinnamon and bubblegum, the field blend pairs well with donburi, udon, miso salmon and pumpkin curry.

“There’s an idea that these mixed vineyards express terroir more than variety, and the inherent complexity can make them more interesting. That’s especially notable given Stampede’s history,” says Milos.

During production, the blend underwent semi-carbonic fermentation, in which the whole cluster of fruit went directly into an open-top fermenter and was gassed daily with CO2. This form of fermentation often provides lifted fresh and candied fruit flavors and softens any tannins. Foot tread and then punched down once daily, the wine was aged in oak barrels and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
