(August 2, 2022) – Kathy Joseph, the pioneering winemaker and owner of Fiddlehead Cellars in Santa Barbara County and with roots as a University of California Davis alumna, is pleased to be the featured vintner at the California Farm Labor Contractor Association’s annual Gabriel Gomez-Sandoval Memorial Farmworker Scholarship Fundraiser and Auction in Sacramento, CA. Founded in 2009, the California Farm Labor Contractor Association.

(CFLCA) has long been an advocate for supporting thoughtful labor management practices throughout the California wine and agriculture industry. The annual scholarship fund was established in 2016 to support the education of students who are farmworker employees (or their children) of California farm labor contractors. In support of this cause, Kathy will serve as the featured vintner at this year’s fundraising auction, which will be held on Thursday, August 4 at Tequila Museo Mayahuel, 1200 K Street, Sacramento, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. To purchase tickets for the auction, please contact: saferisk911@hotmail.com or call 916.505.0946.

“This is an organization close to my heart and one I am honored to have supported over the years,” says Kathy Joseph. “This scholarship program will help many needy students to realize their dreams and our main goal is to create a positive legacy of a better future for so many worthy students. It is so important that we support the men and women who work tirelessly in our vineyards, and I believe one of the best ways is through helping their families and the next generation.”

In 2022, the CFLCA’s scholarship will fund 30 students with scholarships ranging from $1,000 (two-year community colleges) to $2,000 (four-year colleges and universities). To date, over $240,000 in funding has been distributed. These scholarships are incredibly important to these students, many of whom have qualified for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) status, which also limits their eligibility for federal assistance.

“This year, the scholarship program was renamed Gabriel Gomez-Sandoval Memorial Farmworker Scholarship,” says Guadalupe Sandoval, CFLCA founder and executive director until retiring in 2021. “Gabriel is my son who lost his four-year battle with leukemia in 2005. He had recently completed his first semester as a student at California State University, Sacramento and had yet to fulfill his dream of becoming a teacher. Companies such as Fiddlehead Cellars and people like Kathy Joseph have been extremely generous in supporting this scholarship program. This program creates a tremendous legacy of which we are very proud, as he would be as well”.

About MCCNC – CFCLA Scholarships

Since 2009, California Farm Labor Contractor Association (CFCLA) has served a vital role in navigating complex labor laws by promoting best management practices and educational and legislative opportunities to ensure safe and professional environments for grower clients and the farm labor workforce. CFLCA’s Farmworker Scholarship Program was established in 2016 to provide critical financial assistance to students who worked for farm labor contractors, or who have parents who work for farm labor contractors. Their efforts help put food on tables, but their jobs are often seasonal and at or near minimum wage.  Since 2016, CFLCA has awarded over $240,000 in scholarships to qualifying applicants.
