ASEV Announces Significant Publication Changes, Enhancements

DAVIS, Calif., July 8, 2022…The American Society for Enology and Viticulture (ASEV) has announced major changes to strengthen their publications, the American Journal of Enology & Viticulture (AJEV) and Catalyst: Discovery into Practice, effective January 2023.

The Publications Committee confirmed the ASEV Board of Directors approved their recommendation to consolidate Catalyst into AJEV starting January 2023. ASEV adopted a hybrid open-access model in 2021 and recently announced the option for published authors to retroactively apply open access publishing to their articles in AJEV and/or Catalyst.

“This is a timely shift for ASEV. Publishing in an open-access format while maintaining our high-quality standards is something our authors and readers have come to expect of a modern journal,” says Dr. Markus Keller, ASEV Science Editor and Chateau Ste. Michelle Distinguished Professor of Viticulture at Washington State University.

Catalyst was formed in 2016 to offer practical research with immediate application for the industry. The Committee felt it was timely to merge its content into the larger Journal, which has been published since 1950. The newly merged publication will be available online only (with a print-on-demand option), continuous, and no longer tied to an issue format. Instead, article numbers will be assigned, shortening the window from article submission to publication. Newer approaches to article submission, including video format and active writing, will be continued, and are encouraged. For more information about open access and subscription publishing options, visit ajevonline.org.

Formed in 1950 as a professional society dedicated to the interests of enologists, viticulturists and others in the fields of wine and grape research and production, ASEVs membership of approximately 1,600 includes professionals from wineries, vineyards, and academic institutions and organizations from around the world. In addition to publishing the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture (AJEV) and the Catalyst: Discovery into Practice, the Society also hosts its National Conference, scheduled for June 26-29, 2023, at the Napa Valley Marriott in Napa, Calif. ASEV co-hosts the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium with the California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG), which will be held on January 24-26, 2023, at the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center.
