DAVIS, Calif., July 5, 2022–Each year, the American Society for Enology and Viticulture (ASEV) includes a format for student presentations (oral, posters and flash talks) at the ASEV National Conference to provide professional development skills training and constructive critiques for future presentations. ASEV awarded six students with the 2022 Best Student Presentation Awards at the 73rd National Conference in San Diego on June 22. Special thanks are extended to Lallemand for sponsoring the enology oral presentation, poster and flash talk; E. & J. Gallo Winery for viticulture oral presentation and poster sponsorship; and Sunridge Nurseries for sponsoring the viticulture flash talks.
This year’s recipients are as follows:
For Viticulture:
- Oral Presentation – Maria Zumkeller, University of California, Davis, for “No-Till Systems and Perennial Cover Crops Show Minimal Effects on Vineyard Soil Microbiome Composition”
- Poster – Matthew Lange, Oregon State University, Corvallis, for “First-Year Effects of Vineyard Floor Management on Dry-Farmed Pinot noir Vine Performance in Different Soil Types”
- Flash Talk – Geraldine Diverres, Washington State University, Prosser, for “Tailoring Irrigation for White Wine Grapes in Arid Eastern Washington”
For Enology:
- Oral Presentation – Austin Montgomery, Cornell University, New York, for “H2S Formation During Wine Storage in Aluminum Beverage Cans – Effects of Wine Composition and Liner Type”
- Poster – Glycine Jiang, Cornell University, New York, for “Examining the Role of Fructose in Stuck or Sluggish Fermentation: A Correlation, not a Cause”
- Flash Talk – Yiliang Chen, Iowa State University, Ames, for “Synergetic Effect of Accentuated Cut Edges (ACE) and Pectinase on Marquette Wine Quality”
“The level of engagement, preparation and command of the subject the students showed us this year was remarkable.
