The historical winery of Torgiano ready to reveal the new vintages of the labels which have made it famous world-wide

April 8 – This will be a particularly important Vinitaly for Lungarotti, the historic Umbrian winery that during the fair’s 54th edition, scheduled in Verona for April 10 to 13th, will present the new vintages of their most iconic wines. Starting with their flagship label, Rubesco Riserva Vigna Monticchio – Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG of which the 2017 vintage will finally be revealed.

Born in 1964 this brainchild of Giorgio Lungarotti is a pure Sangiovese cru considered one of the best Italian reds. Produced only in the best vintages, it boasts a unique balance between power and elegance that is evocative of Umbria, its hillsides and its people. Rubesco Riserva Vigna Monticchio from another vintage, the 2013, will also represent Lungarotti at OperaWine this year. Indeed, this wine is one of the 130 best Italian wines selected by Wine Spectator for the prestigious event that will be held on April 9th as a Vinitaly “preview” event.

Vinitaly will also represent the perfect setting to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Rubesco – Rosso di Torgiano DOC, another iconic Lungarotti label. Commercialized for the first time in 1962, Rubesco has marked the birth of the first DOC appellation in Umbria (1968) and has made the Lungarotti brand renowned world-wide. To celebrate this important milestone a special limited edition of 3,300 collector’s magnums has been created containing the 2019 vintage of this wine based on Sangiovese and Colorino, embellished by special all-black packaging with golden highlights.

During the fair Lungarotti will also be presenting the 2018 harvest of San Giorgio – Umbria IGT Rosso, the Superumbrian created in 1977 by Giorgio Lungarotti, who introduced Cabernet Sauvignon in Umbria in the 1960’s and was one of the first in Italy to use it in a blend with Sangiovese. San Giorgio is a wine with ample and solid structure and fruity bouquet, mature and enveloping tannins and a long, persistent finish.

Among the other reds for tasting there will also be Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG 2018 from the Lungarotti Montefalco Estate, cultivated organically since 2010. Sagrantino is a varietal that produces very structured and complex wines but when vinified at lower temperatures that limit extraction it succeeds in producing very pleasant wines with great drinkability. That is the case for this Sagrantino, a red with wonderful structure, balanced and with great power, suitable for long aging.

Finally, the tastings will also include Lungarotti’s most important white wines such as Torre di Giano Vigna il Pino 2018 – Bianco di Torgiano DOC based on Vermentino, Trebbiano and Grechetto, considered the company’s white flagship wine. Recognized as a forerunner of Italian whites refined in wood, Vigna il Pino is a wine with lovely structure, balance, elegance and long-lasting finish. Another “Rubesco Riserva Vigna Monticchio and Rubesco are our company’s emblematic wines”, declares C.E.O. Chiara Lungarotti. “In particular the 2017 Rubesco Riserva has revealed itself as an outstanding vintage characterized by a remarkable freshness and great balance despite the difficult climate conditions that characterized the growing season and its particularly low yields. Also the 2019 harvest of Rubesco has really surprised us with its extraordinary drinkability and I’m certain that it will charm everyone right from the first sip”.

Another white to taste is Aurente – Chardonnay di Torgiano DOC 2018, a structured wine produced with pure Chardonnay whose name recalls the preciousness of gold, both in its colour and in the richness of its flavour and aromas. The 2018 vintage reveals its new packaging characterized by a more enveloping label and an elegant, premium bottle.

Lungarotti will be present at Vinitaly from April 10 to 13 in Hall 7, Stand B2.

Lungarotti is a historic Umbrian winery founded in Torgiano by Giorgio Lungarotti and now headed by his daughters Chiara and Teresa, assisted by their mother Maria Grazia and Giorgio’s grandchildren Francesco and Gemma. Today it totals 250 hectares of vineyards situated in the Torgiano Estate (230 ha, VIVA certification since 2018) and the one in Montefalco (20 ha, organically cultivated since 2010). The viticulture practised at both wineries is based on sustainability and biodiversity with a focus on highlighting native varietals interspersed with international varietals. Between the two sites, there are 29 different labels, among which is Rubesco Riserva Vigna Monticchio – Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG, one of the best Italian reds, and Rubesco – Rosso di Torgiano DOC, a profound expression of Umbria.
