“The Provenance” Sale – Bourgogne, Bordeaux | Mr Alberto Lee’s Swiss Collection Brings CHF 8.5 Million

The Flagship Lot in the Sale: A Collection of Six Henri Jayer – 2000 Magnums Sold for Nearly CHF 372,000

Geneva, December 6th 2021 – For its final sale of the season on Sunday December 5th at the Beau-Rivage in Geneva, Baghera/wines presented “The Provenance”, an auction of wines from various prestigious estates in Burgundy and Bordeaux. The sale achieved CHF 8,487,174/$ 9,251,868/€8,177,392 with 100% of the lots sold, thus largely exceeding its low CHF 6 million estimate. These strong results mark a successful end to the year, driven by the ever-increasing participation of online buyers, who won a great number of the lots presented. The enthusiastic response to wines of impeccable quality and unequivocal provenance was amply confirmed.

Lot 96, among the most hotly contested, and the top lot in the sale, featuring a set of six Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux 2000 magnums – one of the very last vintages produced by Henri Jayer, the undisputed master of Pinot Noir, was sold for CHF 372,100, significantly exceeding its estimate. The second lot in the top ten, a set of six Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux 2000 magnums sold for CHF 366,000. The top ten lots fetched nearly three million Swiss francs.

Special mention should be made of the lots (1-31) from the Engel estate, which were snapped up by well-educated collectors. The quality of the collection presented along with the unerring taste of the consignor generated strong demand from an audience paying feverish tribute to the great names of Burgundy, especially with regards to mature vintages and large formats.

Michael Ganne, Executive Director of Baghera/wines, commented: “We are coming to the end of a complex year, which has been studded by important successes for Baghera/wines. Our friend and client Mr. Alberto Lee has honored us with his trust, allowing exceptional wines to be presented to wine lovers around the world, lots of highly desirable and impeccable quality and provenance. We have had the pleasure of welcoming our Geneva clients to the auction room, while online participation was impressive and advance orders resulted in 100% of lots sold. A strong international market drove the price of Engel estate wines through the roof – vintages that are extremely rare vintages that are much-coveted by discerning wine lovers. Not only are they very scarce but also wonderful to drink, a fact of which our customers are aware.”

The notion of family and simplicity is a priceless value at Baghera/wines. When it comes to wine, the pleasure of sharing is placed above all else, and that’s what I like about Michael and Julie, their professionalism and their excellent knowledge of the greatest wine estates and their owners. Being part of the Baghera/wines family is like being invited to the table of the greatest winemakers in Burgundy and Bordeaux every day, with provenance being the key word“, said Alberto Lee, fine wine collector and consignor of the collection offered at auction.
