World’s Largest and Most Influential Wine Competition Names Trefethen Cabernet “Best n Show” for Second Consecutive Year

(Napa, Calif.)—July 21, 2021—Trefethen Family Vineyards, one of Napa’s pioneering family-owned estate wineries, announced that for the second consecutive year, Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) 2021 has awarded the winery’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, Oak Knoll  District, Napa Valley “Best in Show” and a 97 point score. This is the competition’s highest distinction and follows Trefethen’s 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon award of “Best in Show” for Decanter World Wine Awards 2020.

Now in its 18th year, the Decanter World Wine Awards is one of the world’s largest and most influential wine competitions. In 2021, more than 160 expert judges, including 44 Masters of Wine and 11 Master Sommeliers, tasted a record 18,094 wines from 56 countries. Just 0.28% of the total wines tasted at DWWA 2021 secured one of 50 “Best in Show” medals. The Trefethen Cabernet Sauvignon is the only U.S. Cabernet to win a “Best in Show” award in 2021.

Decanter wrote, “For the second year running, it’s [Trefethen’s] Oak Knoll Cabernet which has carried the Best In Show torch for the Napa, underlining the fact that this spot in the Valley seems to be ideal for mingling Napa’s diagnostic generosity and depth with an expressive finesse and an approachability which both appeals to our judges and chimes with the wine world’s zeitgeist. The wine is still dark black-purple, and the aromatic currant and berry fruits are blue, tender and enticing, with skilled and seamless oak integration. On the palate, the wine has weight and depth — but what you really notice in this 2018 vintage is its purity and inner energy; the weight and depth follow on after, but don’t overwhelm from the start. The seamless integration of acidity and brisk tannin, too, is another mouthwatering hallmark — of skilled winemaking, or the place? Who’s to say?”

Trefethen’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon ($65) is available nationwide at leading fine wine stores, in restaurants, at the winery, and online at www.trefethen.com.
