Online roundtable explores the physical, emotional, and financial investment required to produce icon wines from the world’s most recognized black grape variety

Horse Heaven Hills AVA, WA. March 19, 2021 – On March 31, Jaime Araujo of Accendo Cellars (Napa Valley, California), Jeff Andrews and Ray McKee of Trothe (Horse Heaven Hills, Washington State), and Virginia Wilcox of Vasse Felix (Margaret River, Western Australia) will take part in an online conversation on what it takes to craft world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. The session will be moderated by Erik Segelbaum, founder of Somlyay, who brings extensive experience in hospitality, wine education, and cellar curation.

Topics will cover the physical, emotional, and financial investment it takes to make some of the finest wines in the world: farming the vineyard, dealing with weather conditions year to year, selecting the best fruit, crafting the blend, and actually having to sell the wine.

To paint a comprehensive picture, pioneers from wine regions around the world will engage in a discussion of processes and how they may differ by region. Jaime Araujo is the daughter of Bart and Daphne Araujo, who created one of Napa Valley’s finest estates on the Eisele property; now she is leading the next generation of the family to continue to fashion stellar representations of one of the world’s leading wine regions. Jeff Andrews is the fourth generation of an esteemed Washington farming family who went to law school before returning to work the land in Horse Heaven Hills. He is determined, with the help of winemaker Ray McKee, to elevate the reputation of this Washington State AVA for producing some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines, matching those of top regions of the world. Virginia Willcock is the acclaimed winemaker at Vasse Felix, the first modern winery to plant in Margaret River, one of Australia’s greatest regions for Cabernet Sauvignon which has built its reputation on individuality and terroir.

“We sometimes take for granted the world-class Cabernet Sauvignon made in prestigious regions such as Bordeaux, Napa Valley, Margaret River, the Horse Heaven Hills, and elsewhere,” says McKee. “But there is an astonishing amount of craft and care which goes into making these wines: working with the land, the climate, the grape variety, and in the winery to ensure that the wines express a sense of place and can age for decades.”

This is a unique opportunity to hear the voices behind some of the world’s greatest wines and learn everything that goes behind great Cabernet in three distinct, high-quality regions from across the world. The conversation will take place on March 31, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. PT. Register: https://bit.ly/register-crafting-world-class-cabernet.
