March 16th – Napa, CA – La Pelle Wines, founded in 2016 by winemaker Maayan Koschitzky (Atelier Melka), vineyard manager, Miguel Luna (Partner, Silverado Farming Company) and Peter Richmond (Founder, Silverado Farming Company) has announced the release of three new single vineyard wines. The partners, whose mission it is to create terroir-driven wines that are the ultimate expression of the sites from which their fruit was sourced, produced just over 100 cases of wine from each of the designates of note.
They include the Ceniza (Spanish for ash) Vineyard, located in the Coombsville AVA, where the soils are laden with volcanic ash and rich loam. The 2018 Cenzia Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon will be the first vintage from this Coombsville AVA-based site. The vines are 18 years old and the site itself is farmed sustainably.
The Red Hen Vineyard, long coveted for its organically farmed, high-quality fruit, is the second new designate in the La Pelle Single Vineyard Collection, and this Cabernet Sauvignon will also be from the 2018 vintage. The vines are 20 years old and the site is located in the Oak Knoll AVA, on the west side of the Napa Valley, where the mountains meet the valley floor. The soils are well drained gravelly loam, with a measure of clay mixed within.
The third wine in the lineup is the 2018 Alluvium Vineyard, located in the St. Helena AVA. Appropriately named for the soil composition of this site, which is mainly alluvial fans, this wine finds its provenance in vines that are 40 years old and are grown under the California sprawl technique.
All three wines are under an artful suite of labels which differs slightly from the balance of the La Pelle portfolio. All the labels, however, feature the La Pelle logo—the shovel, for from the shovel’s first plunge into the vineyard soil, to its last scrape of the fermentation tank, La Pelle wines are equally crafted in the vineyard and in the cellar and are a true collaboration between farmer and winemaker.
