An Organic and Fair-Trade Boutique Winery Owned by the Bocardo Family

February 8th, 2021, Aventura, FL—The Zonin Family’s 1821 Fine Wine & Spirits U.S. subsidiary adds Argentinian winery Proemio to its growing global portfolio. Proemio is a family-owned, boutique winery led by third generation Mendoza-born winemaker, Marcelo Bocardo. Proemio means “Prologue” in Old Medieval Spanish; the winery has been certified Organic since 2017 and is also certified as a Fair for Life company.

In 2001, Marcelo Bocardo, the descendant of an Italian immigrant family, founded Proemio Winery with the goal to handcraft sustainable top-quality super and ultra-premium wines with an emphasis on the unique character of their soil.  “Marcelo’s vision is evident throughout the foundation of this award-winning portfolio. “The opportunity for Proemio’s success extends across Chains, Fine Wine and the On-Premise throughout the U.S.” says Shawn Balzano, 1821 Fine Wine & Spirits Sales Director.

“As an Italian descendant, it is a great honor to partner with the Zonin family.  We share the same passion for viticulture; crafting authentic, terroir driven wines, while caring for the environment for future generations. It is part of our philosophy,” said Bocardo.

Proemio produces clean energy that represents 50% of their consumption and are working to reach 100% in the next years. They sell over 300,000Kg of grape stems to be reused as brick oven heating wood and 120,000 Kg of grape skins to the alcohol industry, which then comes back as natural fertilizer for the vines in their winery. Proemio winery is also using more solar energy and started a recycling initiative with employee training.

Proemio boasts ongoing state-of-the-art technology, including a double selection belt, gravity fed tanks and pneumatic presses. Proemio utilizes stainless steel and concrete tanks that allow for an efficient use of energy during vinification.  The company has invested in new concrete eggs/vats, more hail net protections, as well as new barrels to grow their Reserve tier.
