Explore Renowned Single Vineyard Sites with Geographical Digest’s Virtual Wine Series

The global wine tasting series continues with a deep-dive into the terroir of some of the world’s top vineyards

January 19, 2021 (Los Angeles, Calif.)  The SOMM Journal is set to broadcast the next installment of its Geographical Digest Wine Education Webinar Series, held in partnership with National Geographic Books and its newly released New Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia. “An Exploration of Renowned Single Vineyards” is scheduled for virtual broadcast on January 21, 2021, designed to educate enthusiasts of all levels on the unique terroir of some of the world’s most iconic vineyard sites.

It’s true that “terroir” is one of those magical words that is hard to define in simple terms, yet as a concept, it speaks volumes. Encompassing soil composition, solar radiation, wind exposure, diurnal shift, slope of a hill, proximity to – or distance from – bodies of water and masses of rock, vine training, varietal selection, tradition, innovation, and so much more, terroir endows a unique sense of place to wine. Within each plot of land, the subtlety of terroir is nearly imperceptible to the naked eye, yet it can make wines grown within close proximity so shockingly different to the trained palate.

“An Exploration of Renowned Single Vineyards” will take attendees on a journey through various corners of the earth to discover the microcosms that make a vineyard unique and how terroir impacts a wine’s profile. Panelists include: Will Costello, Estates Ambassador for Bien Nacido & Solomon Hills Estates in Santa Barbara County; James Ewart, Winemaker for Diora Estate in Monterey; Riccardo Bogi, Sales Manager for Italy’s Argiano Srl Società Agricola; Isabel Mitarakis, Gravas Winemaker for Chile’s Concha y Toro Gravas; Mike Sinor, Founding Winemaker of Ancient Peaks in Paso Robles; Christophe Paubert, Winemaker & General Manager of Stag’s Leap in Napa; and Patrick d’Aulan, Owner of Argentina’s Alta Vista Wines.

Live virtual tastings will be held at 9AM PST, 12PM EST, and 6PM Central Europe on January 21. Enthusiasts can register for the live webinar or view past on-demand sessions, free of charge, at SommJournal.com.
