(December 17, 2020 – New York, NY) – Champagne Pommery is thrilled to announce that the Champagne vineyards of the Vranken-Pommery Group have begun their conversion to organic viticulture from the 2020 harvest onwards. This conversion involves 175 hectares of the 285 hectares managed by the Champagne House. The conversion, with a minimum duration of three years, will be progressive to adapt the vineyards and the structure of the demanding viticulture. The decision has been carefully considered by the Vranken-Pommery group and is the culmination of many years of large-scale experimentation encompassing all of their vineyards. According to Clément Pierlot, Champagne Pommery’s 10th cellar master, « The conversion to organic viticulture was a natural evolution given Vranken Pommery’s commitment to the environment for the past 20 years. It reflects the President’s philosophy and is a new step forward to a 100% sustainable viticulture. Our team is very focused on this new project. We are proud to be a part of the family owned group Vranken-Monopole and to play a role towards a better future.»

Based on the firm conviction of President Paul-Francois Vranken, organic viticulture comes naturally within the scope of the Group’s philosophy since almost 2000 hectares of vines in Camargue and in Provence, which belong to Vranken-Pommery, are already certified as organic viticulture. According to Paul-Francois Vranken, “After the experience we’ve had since 2010, we can truly show today, that in Champagne, there is a new direction to take towards organic viticulture. I think that we will move towards a better quality Champagne, and one of the drivers of this will be the constant transformation of cultivation methods.” In Camargue and in Provence, the mission has always been – generation after generation – to safeguard and exploit the natural spaces by respecting them and preserving the environment. During the past years, the progress and evolving technologies in these vineyards have resulted in a precise viticulture, which means that all the products used are of a natural origin in these vineyards.  The objective has always been to prioritize the life of the soil, and the survival of the animal and plant species, hence supporting the ecosystem. In 2023, all vineyards in Camargue and Provence will be classified according to the European regulation as organic viticulture, allowing the group to elaborate wines originating from this viticulture.

At the same time, Quinta do Grifo and its 130 hectares situated in the Douro Superior in Portugal just started its organic conversion during the 2020 harvest.

Champagne Pommery will not move away from the other environmental certifications already obtained for their vineyards (High Environmental Value and Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne) since these approaches are complementary to the organic status they are moving towards. Vranken-Pommery remains a committed player concerning these two certifications and upholds all supporting activities for its winegrowing partners.

Organic viticulture is a logical next step to the ecological practices Vranken-Pommery has pursued for over 20 years. Vranken-Pommery vineyards were the first to be certified according to ISO 14001, the benchmark standard for Environmental Management.

This milestone in the history of the company shows the Champagne House’s leadership in sustainability. It is also an opportunity to congratulate all those who work the vineyards with passion day after day with an unwavering commitment for the environment and the quality of Vranken-Pommery champagnes.
