Sangiacomo Family Earns 2019 Sustainable Farmer Award at Sonoma County Harvest Fair

Sonoma, CA, October 14, 2019 – In addition to celebrating world-class food and beverage, the annual Sonoma County Harvest Fair paid tribute to outstanding members of Sonoma County’s agricultural community during their recent awards ceremony. Earning this year’s Sustainable Farmers Award is the Sangiacomo Family; farmers in Sonoma County for the past 90 years. Fruit growers turned winegrowers, and beginning with the 2016 vintage, producers of award-winning wines, the Sangiacomo Family has been committed to their mission of sustainable farming with Mother Nature while maintaining their long-standing reputation for growing high-quality, sustainable wine grapes.

In 2015, all Sangiacomo vineyards, including over 1600 acres of wine grapes grown in Sonoma Valley, Petaluma Gap, Carneros and Sonoma Coast, were certified sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA). The family released the first vintage of their namesake wine last year; small-batch, hand-crafted Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon from the best of the family’s estate vineyards.

Settling in Sonoma County in 1927, farming is a way of life for the Sangiacomo Family. With operations now being run by the third generation, Mike Sangiacomo, Steve Sangiacomo, Mia Pucci and son-in-law Mike Pucci, the Sangiacomo family’s focus is to grow world-class wine grapes and craft wines of complexity and balance. Priorities include quality as well as environmentally conscientious farming practices. Not only dedicated to being responsible stewards of the land, the Sangiacomo Family values their employees, clients and community; treating all with the highest levels of respect and consideration.

According to Sonoma County Winegrowers President, Karissa Kruse, who assisted in selecting Sonoma County Harvest Fair’s winners, “The Sangiacomo Family are pillars of our grape growing community. They were early leaders of sustainability in their vineyards and in using the sustainable winegrowing label to reach consumers. Steve Sangiacomo is a long-term board member of the Sonoma County Winegrowers, the Sonoma County Grape Growers Foundation and a member of the Sonoma County Center for Ag Sustainability. Mike Sangiacomo served for many years on the board of CSWA. The family’s generosity has helped support a number of critical programs for our farmworkers and their families. The Sangiacomo family was an obvious choice for Sustainable Farmer/Grape Grower and we are so thankful for their ongoing support and leadership.”

On receiving the honor, Steve Sangiacomo said, “As a grape grower, anytime you win an award for being a farmer it means a lot because it is at the core of who we are. My grandfather came to Sonoma County 90 years ago as an Italian immigrant and called Sonoma ‘God’s Country.’ We are so fortunate to be here and live here.”
