August 9, 2025 (Palisade, CO) – Grand Valley’s own Sauvage Spectrum Estate Winery & Vineyard is proud to announce that two of its estate-grown wines—the 2024 Zweigelt and 2023 Syrah—have been awarded Double Gold Medals at the prestigious Colorado Governor’s Cup Wine Competition.
In an even more exciting turn, the 2024 Zweigelt was chosen for the elite Governor’s Cup Case and entered into the sweepstakes round, signifying it as one of the top wines in the state. Additionally, the 2023 Teroldego, a fan favorite, earned a Gold Medal, further reinforcing Sauvage Spectrum’s position as a leading innovator in Colorado winemaking.
“These awards are a testament to the strength of our estate vineyards, the talent of our team, and our fearless approach to winemaking,” said Patric Matysiewski, Winemaker at Sauvage Spectrum. “We push boundaries to highlight the unique expression of each varietal, and it’s an honor to see our dedication recognized at this level.”
A Celebration of Colorado Terroir
The Governor’s Cup competition is judged by a panel of nationally renowned sommeliers, wine writers, and industry professionals. This year’s competition featured 261 entries from across the state, making the recognition even more meaningful.
The 2023 Syrah impressed judges with its crimson garnet hue and complex profile: espresso bean, vanilla, wild raspberry, sweet cherry, and rhubarb, all lifted by a hint of eucalyptus. Judges praised its “great balance of vibrant florals, concentrated fruit, and power.”
Syrah thrives in the Grand Valley AVA, where high elevation, warm days, and cool nights create ideal conditions for ripening. The region’s intense sunlight and well-drained, rocky soils help develop bold flavors while preserving natural acidity and elegance.
“The extended growing season here allows Syrah to achieve full flavor development and polished tannins,” said Kaibab Sauvage, Co-Owner and Winegrower. “It’s a perfect variety for our high desert climate.”
Meanwhile, the lesser-known Zweigelt, a red grape originally from the Alpine regions of Europe, is rapidly becoming a Colorado standout. The 2024 vintage wowed judges with its balance of ripe fruit, spice, and a candied quality, earning it a Double Gold and coveted placement in the Governor’s Cup Collection.
“Zweigelt is a grower’s dream—it ripens early, handles cold winters well, and produces strikingly vibrant wines with moderate yields,” said Sauvage. “It’s a natural fit for Colorado, and we’re excited to showcase its potential.”
