Sangiacomo Family Wines 2018 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay earns 99 points, Best of the Best, Best of Show White Wine and Best of Sonoma County at The Press Democrat’s Annual Wine Competition
Sonoma, CA, August 6, 2020 – Sangiacomo Family Wines 2018 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay beat out 1,064 wines tasted and tested by 24 wine industry professionals to win The Press Democrat’s eighth annual North Coast Wine Challenge; a competition amongst wines exclusively produced and bottled in Northern California’s premier winegrowing regions. Becoming only the second chardonnay in the contest’s history to take home top prize of Best of the Best, Sangiacomo Family Wines 2018 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay earned 99 points and also won Best of Show White Wine and Best of Sonoma County. According to The Press Democrat, the winning Chardonnay “impressed the judges as a perfect reflection of Sonoma County’s fog-kissed coastal vineyards, offering complexity, the perfect amount of crisp acidity, a whisper of integrated oak and a long, lingering finish.” Recently launching their wine label with the 2016 vintage, this was the first year the Sangiacomo Family entered the North Coast Wine Challenge.
“Chardonnay is part of our grape-growing DNA. It’s the first variety that we planted, and we’ve been planting it for 50 years,” said Steve Sangiacomo, who co-owns the business with his siblings, Mike Sangiacomo and Mia Pucci, “I think the trend is now toward complexity and minerality and nice acidity to balance the richness and fruit… The wines represent our vineyards, and our vineyards are expressed through our wines.”
Sangiacomo Wines classic 2018 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is the result of a fortuitous collaboration between an experienced grape growing family in a perfect climate and a brilliant winemaker with a deep love for his craft. “My winemaking style really lends itself to the Sangiacomos, because I really enjoy the cooler climate chardonnays and pinots,” said Winemaker James MacPhail, a well-known “non-interventionist” who let’s the fruit and vineyard’s sense of place speak for itself. “I love wines with weight and texture, and there’s no better example of this than our 2018 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. We can make extremely sophisticated chardonnays here in Sonoma County.”
Sourced from two of the Sangiacomo’s fourteen vineyards, two-thirds of the grapes in the 2018 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay came from the family’s colder Roberts Road vineyard, in both the Petaluma Gap and Sonoma Coast AVAs, and the remaining fruit was grown in the Green Acres Vineyard in Carneros. All of the Sangiacomo Family’s vineyards are certified sustainable. The grapes came from 4 different clones, adding to it’s praised complexity. Lauded also for its balance and rich hints of citrus and pear flavors, the 2018 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay was part of the Sangiacomo Family’s recent Spring Release and has also earned high ratings from Robert Parker Wine Advocate and accolades from the Napa Valley Register and Bartender Magazine.
