Caiarossa: Where Wine Meets Architecture, Philosophy and Nature

On the Tuscan Coast, a design-driven winery tells a story of beauty through biodynamics, harmony and sensory experience

July 3, 2025 (Riparbella, Pisa) — At Caiarossa, nothing is left to chance. Every detail — from the parcelization of the vineyards to the careful selection of each grape variety, from the winery’s architectural design to the symbolic use of colors — reflects a broader vision in which respect for the territory and human beings coexist in perfect harmony with the pursuit of making fine wines.

Located on the Tuscan Coast, surrounded by the scents of the Mediterranean maquis and sweeping views of the sea, Caiarossa is a winery that blends aesthetics, sustainability, and knowledge into distinctive wines. The iconic head of Caiarossa — featured in the logo and on the labels — is based on a unique Etruscan masterpiece from the family’s private collection, representing Dionysus, the God of wine and vegetation. This symbol embodies the family’s deep connection with this land and their artistic sensibility, reflecting the values of heritage, tradition, and a profound respect for the territory.

A Visionary Vineyard and Philosophy

At Caiarossa, every aspect—from the rolling vineyards to the winery’s bold architecture—is part of a unified vision. Perched on the Tuscan coast, this estate invites guests to first open their eyes to its vast panoramas and radiant colors, then close them to immerse themselves in the subtle energies of the Mediterranean maquis and the vibrant character of its wines.

Caiarossa has embraced biodynamics since its very beginning — not simply as a method, but as a core part of its philosophy. It nurtures a living ecosystem where vines, olive trees, bees, and people coexist and flourish in harmony.

Architectural Poetry in Practice

Influenced by geobiology and Feng Shui, Caiarossa’s winery is a masterful integration of form, light, energy, and orientation. Built into the hillside across four gravity-fed levels, it allows for the natural movement of grapes and juice through each stage of winemaking.

Inside, large north-south facing windows enhance natural light, especially in the fermentation area, where the yellow-painted interiors further amplify brightness — ensuring a comfortable, naturally lit workspace. Thanks to the hill’s slope, this vinification area is completely underground, benefiting from the earth’s natural coolness and insulation.

The barrel cellar (“barricaia”) combines aesthetic refinement with functional purpose. Most notably, the red color reconnects the space to the earth beyond its walls, creating a symbolic link with the surrounding land. At the center of the room, an opening in the floor leads directly to the ground, housing probes that help discharge electromagnetic and electrostatic fields.

Temperature and humidity are constantly monitored to ensure optimal maturation in wood barrels. Natural ventilation is provided through a system of openings connected to the outside and to the adjacent forest. The fourth and underground levels of the winery are entirely dedicated to wine aging.

As part of the Toscana Wine Architecture network, Caiarossa’s winery is not only a place of production but a space where poetry and precision technique meet — crafting wines that appeal to both connoisseurs and lovers of beauty.

Biodiversity and Sustainable Living

Since 1998, Caiarossa has farmed its land biodynamically, earning Demeter certification in 2005. Covering 110 hectares, the estate includes vineyards (40 hectares), wood (33 hectares) olive groves, an organic vegetable garden, and an apiary — forming a vibrant, interconnected ecosystem. The winery embraces a holistic approach to the land: harvesting olives for oil, vegetables for sauces, and honey to accompany tastings.

Immersive Experiences in the Estate

Visitors are welcomed for immersive experiences that include vineyard walks, winery tours and guided tastings. Options range from introductory tastings and verticals of aged wines to creative workshops and tailored experiences that explore Caiarossa’s unique terroir and philosophy. Gift cards are also available for those who wish to share a moment of beauty and discovery with others.

About Caiarossa
In the hills near the medieval village of Riparbella, on Tuscany’s coastal heights, nature reveals both strength and serenity. Lush vegetation, fruit trees, olive groves, vegetables and aromatic plants bring to life the colors, scents, and wonders of a unique territory – the land where Caiarossa stands. A magical light by day, created by the reflection of the sun’s rays on the distant sea, and a starry sky by night – this captivating atmosphere embraces the winery, red like the center of the earth, resting on the southwest slope of the hill. It was in 2004 that Eric Albada Jelgersma decided to purchase an estate in this special part of Italy, bringing with him the expertise he had developed over the years in Bordeaux with Château Giscours, a renowned Grand Cru Classé in the Margaux appellation. Eric Albada fell in love with this small yet beautiful winery, nestled in the Mediterranean scrub on the western slope of a hill overlooking the sea. Today, his children Dennis, Derk, and Valérie continue in their father’s footsteps, striving for the utmost precision in winemaking. This pursuit is centered on maintaining a deep connection with nature’s rhythms. That’s why, from its inception, the winery has followed the principles of biodynamic agriculture, aiming to enhance the vitality and resilience of the soil. Caiarossa wines are unique: refined blends that balance experimentation with harmony.
