Masterclasses Revealed for 4th Edition of Vini d’Abbazia 2025

Following the success of the 2024 edition, which welcomed over 4,000 visitors, Vini d’Abbazia returns from June 6 to 8 in the stunning setting of the Abbazia di Fossanova. At the heart of the program, a series of six masterclasses led by prominent figures from the world of wine and culture. Together with the producers, they will explore current themes in the wine industry and wine tourism, offering immersive tasting journeys and in-depth insights into terroirs and their identities.

May 20, 2025 (Priverno, Italy) — From June 6 to 8, 2025, the enchanting Abbazia di Fossanova in Priverno (Lazio, Italy), will host the fourth edition of Vini d’Abbazia, an event that celebrates the monastic winemaking tradition through history, culture, and high-quality tastings. This year’s edition confirms the successful format that attracted over 4,000 visitors last year and brings together more than 30 wineries from Italian and international abbeys, secular producers connected to monastic sites, and regional consortia. Over three days, masterclasses, cultural talks, and conferences will animate the Abbazia. The tasting counters will be set up in the evocative Chiostro, while the Slow Food Village will offer gastronomic delights from the region. The Refettorio of the abbey  – one of the most iconic spaces of the monastic complex – will host the masterclasses: six appointments that deepen the relationship between wine, culture, and place, guided by acclaimed speakers from the worlds of wine, archaeology, and storytelling. Themes include the focus on Cesanese, sparkling wines, ancient Roman grape varieties, amphora winemaking, wine tourism, and the female perspective in Italian wine.

FRIDAY, JUNE 6:
CESANESE, THE SOUL OF LAZIO – WITH ANDREA AMADEI. FINE SPARKLING WINES – WITH CHIARA GIOVONI.
At 6:00 PM, the program opens with “Cesanese: the wine of the Popes”, led by Andrea Amadei, sommelier and voice of Decanter on Rai Radio 2. An emotional journey dedicated to the symbolic grape of Lazio, whose roots go back to ancient Latium, where Cesanese was prized for its elegance at papal banquets. After a period of obscurity, the grape is now experiencing a renaissance thanks to producers bringing it back to the spotlight. In tasting: Alberto Giacobbe, Casale della Ioria, Federici, Giovanni Terenzi, L’Avventura, Maria Elena Sinibaldi, and Maria Ernesta Berucci. At 8:00 PM“The Joy of Sparkling Wines”, curated by Chiara Giovoni – journalist, author, and Ambassadeur du Champagne for Italy – will take participants on a journey across terroirs, narrated through eight expressive sparkling wines, from Champagne to Alta Langa, including bottles made in abbeys and using Metodo Classico. Wineries featured: Abbazia di Novacella, Abbazia di Praglia, Beppe Marino, Champagne Monial, Cincinnato, Domaine de l’Abbaye du Petit Quincy – Domaine Gruhier, Marco Carpineti, and Monastero dei Santi Gervasio e Protasio with La Vigna di Sarah.

SATURDAY, JUNE 7:
THE LEGACY OF THE ROMANS – WITH CRISTINA MERCURI. THE REVIVAL OF AMPHORAE – WITH HELMUTH KÖCHER AND SIMONA GERI.
At 6:00 PM “The Wine of the Romans: the Nectar of History” will take the audience 2,000 years back in time, thanks to a dialogue between Cristina Mercuri (DipWSET, Wine Educator, Wine Editor Forbes, and Master of Wine candidate) and Federica Colaiacomo, archaeologist and scientific director of Museo Lavinium. An exploration of ancient Roman viticulture and grape varieties still cultivated today. In the glass: Abbaye de Morgeot, Cincinnato, Domaine de l’Abbaye du Petit Quincy – Domaine Gruhier, Marco Carpineti, Muri Gries, Sant’Andrea, Tenute Capaldo (Abbazia del Goleto), Valle Isarco (Monastero di Sabiona). At 8:00 PM“Amphora” will shine a spotlight on an ancient winemaking technique that has found new life among contemporary producers. The masterclass, in collaboration with Amphora Revolution of Merano WineFestival and Vinitaly, will be introduced by Helmuth Köcher, founder of Merano WineFestival, and led by Simona Geri, CEO of The Winesetter and WineHunter Scout. Eight labels will guide participants on a sensorial journey showcasing amphora vinification as a tool to authentically express the identity of grape and place. In tasting: Abbazia di Novacella, Abbazia di Propezzano, Albetum Orange, Casale del Giglio, Luca Leggero, Marco Carpineti, Terre Antiche, and Vinum Hadrianum.

SUNDAY, JUNE 8:
ITALY OF WINE THROUGH WINE TOURISM – WITH FABIO SIRONI AND CHIARA GIORLEO. FEMALE VISION IN WINE – WITH MANUELA ZENNARO.
At 6:00 PM“The Journey” will be a masterclass focused on wine tourism and the beauty of Italy’s wine landscapes, led by Chiara Giorleo – food and wine critic and head of the Italian panel for World’s Best Vineyards – together with Fabio Sironieditor of DOVE magazine and expert in travel and storytelling. A journey through vineyards, architecture, and spirituality, told through eight wines and the places they represent: from Umbria with Arnaldo Caprai and San Masseo of Fraternità di Bose, to Tuscany with Badia a Passignano by Marchesi Antinori and Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore; from the Langhe with Cascina del Monastero by Giuseppe Grasso, to Franciacorta with Convento dell’Annunciata Wine Retreat by Bellavista; from Friuli Venezia Giulia with Abbazia di Rosazzo by Livio Felluga, to the Venetian lagoon with San Francesco della Vigna by Santa Margherita. At 8:00 PM, the final masterclass “Women’s Emotions, Wine’s Emotions” will focus on female talent and vision in Italian wine. The session will be led by Manuela Zennarojournalist at La Repubblica and regional representative of Le Donne del Vino association. In tasting: Abbazia di Busco, Cantina Villa Gianna, Donato Giangirolami, Giovanni Terenzi, La Matina, Monastero di Vitorchiano, Petrucca e Vela, and Pileum – eight stories of passion, identity, and female entrepreneurship.

VINI D’ABBAZIA: STORIES OF WINE FROM THE HEART OF LAZIO
Vini d’Abbazia is a journey through the millennial connection between wine, spirituality, and place. The event features some of the most renowned monastic wineries in Italy, secular producers tied to monastic lands, and the French network Les Vins d’Abbayes.
