Scheid Family Wines Lightweight Glass Initiative Drives Sustainability in Wine Shipping

Reduction of 712,000 lbs. of Glass Weight in Past Year

Salinas, CA – April 29, 2024 – In honor of Earth Month, Scheid Family Wines proudly announces progress on its glass  lightweighting project, part of the company’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and reducing its  carbon footprint.

Recognizing the environmental impact of traditional wine packaging, Scheid Family Wines worked to transform its  approach to packaging sustainability. Through strong partnerships with its glass vendor partners and key buyers, the  company has successfully removed 712,000 pounds of glass weight from its shipping processes over the course of the  past year, effectively slashing its carbon footprint and advancing eco-conscious practices. Starting with their “Beer for  You” brand Sunny with a Chance of Flowers, Scheid systematically reviewed all its products and moved over 50 SKUs  from conventional to lightweight glass.

Advancements in lightweight glass technology allow for the creation of thin-sided glass containers that rival conventional  glass packaging in both stability and strength. Lightweight glass maintains product quality and improves the ecological  impact of conventional glass boles, removing shipping weight, being 100% recyclable and having no impact on the  contents (wine).

“Along with our wind turbine that generates 100% of the power we need for our winery campus, moving to lightweight  glass for a substantial poron of our wine production underscores our ongoing commitment to sustainability and  responsible business practices,” said Heidi Scheid, Executive Vice President at Scheid Family Wines. “It’s great to see that  glass lightweighting has become an important topic in our industry and that the noon of a high quality wine needing a

heavy bole is rapidly becoming outdated. As a company, we’re going to keep pushing for improvements that are beer  for the planet, so look for more announcements in the future.”
