June 11th – Michael Benedict, a visionary wine grower and vintner — one of only a small group of individuals who elevated California wine onto the world stage –passed peacefully on July third. A botanist and mathematician, wildland preservationist and expert sailor, Michael was above all an independent thinker who approached winemaking from the perspective of a naturalist.
In 1971, he co-founded and planted the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley, which would become one of California’s most prestigious and heralded vineyards, and in turn the foundation of the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. In so doing, Michael became known as the quiet force behind the establishment of the modern-day Santa Barbara County wine growing region.
A deep intellectual thinker, curiosity drove Michael to develop new vineyards and vineyard techniques for diverse microclimates and varietals across Santa Barbara County and beyond. His practice of combining old-world methods with modern ideas in an undeveloped terroir ultimately led to the health, longevity, and reputation of the Sanford & Benedict vineyard.
Michael’s impact will have a lasting legacy on vineyards, winemaking, and land preservation in Santa Barbara County. Those who were fortunate to have known and/or been mentored by Michael will continue to meld his wisdom with new ideas and will surely share his visionary spirit and kindheartedness, as he did with many.
John Terlato and Sanford Winery & Vineyards will host a Celebration of Life for Michael at a later date. Details will be announced in due course.
