May 31st – For the second year in a row, Bauman’s Cider Co. has taken home “Cidermaker of the Year” honors at both the prestigious Great Lakes International Cider & Perry Competition as well as the Portland International Cider Cup. Collectively, their ciders were awarded 3 Best in Class medals, 6 Gold Medals, 19 Silver Medals, and 5 Bronze medals between the two competitions.
Owner, Christine Walter had this to say about the awards:
”I am incredibly proud of my team and what we have accomplished over the last two years. We will continue to strive to innovate within the cider industry and make the best cider we can possibly make every day!”
In addition, this week Bauman’s launched its first-ever canned ciders including a hopped cider made in collaboration with TopWire Hop Project and Crosby Hops. The cider named “My Own Private Idaho 7” won a Silver medal at both the GLINTCAP and PICC competitions previously mentioned.
The second of their new canned ciders is the “Bauman’s Authentic” pub cider which Christine describes as “the most drinkable cider we’ve ever made.” Coming in at 5.5% ABV, this cider is made from fresh-pressed local apples and back-sweetened with just a splash of juice. Apple-forward, it’s nicely balanced with a subtle sweetness and a dry finish.
Look for these new ciders at local retailers, bars, and restaurants in Oregon and Washington this summer.
About GLINTCAP/PICC
Since 2005, the annual Great Lakes International Cider and Perry competition (GLINTCAP) in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has evaluated the best ciders in the world. This year had record cider submissions, with 1,351 total entries—1,105 commercial and 246 noncommercial—making GLINTCAP the largest cider competition in the world.
The Portland International Cider Cup (PICC) is a competition managed by the Northwest Cider Association (NWCA). It is open to cideries all over the Pacific Northwest and is the strictest cider competition in the US. Now, going into its 10th year, the PICC has become known within the industry as the premiere competition for picking quality ciders rather than a participation award for marketing purposes.
About Bauman’s Cider
Christine’s foray into cider making began after she learned that her great-grandfather Stephen was known locally for making cider on their farm for friends and family. She approached her new endeavor with intentions any purist would be envious of, using only fruit grown and harvested on their farm. Today, her ciders are still made with this ethos in mind whenever possible.
With product lines range from accessible favorites like Loganberry, Clyde’s Dry, and Peach Raspberry, complex and nuanced single varietal ciders like McIntosh, Mountain Rose, and Muscadet de Dieppe, and unique limited release ciders, Bauman’s continues to attract new consumers to their unique and approachable products.
