Mayacamas Olds Is Named COO of Sonoma’s Enterprise Vineyards and Winery Sixteen 600

Founder Phil Coturri appoints Olds to run both his influential organic vineyard management company and his family-owned winery.

March 2, 2022, Sonoma, Calif. — Phil Coturri, the founder of Enterprise Vineyards and Winery Sixteen 600 in Sonoma County, has appointed Mayacamas Olds as Chief Operating Officer for both the well-known organic vineyard management company and the Coturri family’s winery.

Olds was named to the newly created position March 1, after building a successful career managing vineyards for some of the most prominent names in the Sonoma and Napa valleys. She is known as much for her leading-edge farming techniques as her sharp business sense. Olds will be overseeing Enterprise’s vineyard operations in Sonoma, Napa and Solano counties, growing grapes for the regions’ renowned labels, as well as bringing her experience to operations for Winery Sixteen 600.

“Mayacamas Olds is one of the most talented viticulturalists I know,” Coturri said. “We share a dedication to organic and regenerative growing and have the same vineyard sensibilities. She’s developed innovative ways to farm naturally and respectfully in every vineyard situation in which she’s worked, whether on the 14 acres of her family’s vineyard or for Diageo Chateau & Estate’s 6,800 acres spread across California. Her deep experience in the vineyard and skill in management gives Mayacamas unique insight into the workings of Enterprise Vineyards and will enable us to create a structure that will guarantee that we remain a family business.” 

Olds grew up on her family’s Sky Vineyards property on Mt. Veeder in Napa Valley. After graduating from the University of California, Davis with a bachelor’s degree in fermentation science, she served as general manager at Sky Vineyards, as business manager and viticulturalist at Enterprise Vineyards, and as a sustainability consultant while earning an MBA in corporate sustainability from the Presidio Graduate School. She was named director of vineyard operations and grower relations for Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines and then worked as the head of viticulture at Newton Vineyards in St. Helena before signing on as general manager of Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards in Sonoma. 

“It is exciting to accept a position with such potential to have a positive impact on the grape farming in the Sonoma and Napa valleys,” Olds said. “The heritage and history of these legendary wine regions are important to me, but adapting to the future even more so. As the climate continues to change, we will shape our vineyard management approach to focus even more on resiliency and regeneration. Our emphasis on farming organically will continue to be our primary sustainability tool, but we will also make use of innovative and regenerative technology to enable Enterprise to continue growing world class grapes to be made into world class wines.”

Coturri will remain involved in Enterprise and Winery Sixteen 600, as well as consult in vineyards outside of Sonoma. He founded Enterprise Vineyards in 1979. The company maintains and enhances the vineyards of some 35 properties in Sonoma, Napa and Solano counties and serves as a consultant in other regions. All the vineyards that Enterprise farms are certified organic by the CCOF. The company’s 100-plus employees use organic and regenerative techniques to produce high quality grapes that are made into distinctive, character-filled wines by wineries including Kamen Estate, Mayacamas, Laurel Glen, and Oakville Ranch.

Under the direction of Coturri’s son Sam, Winery Sixteen 600 is best known for wines made from Rhône grape varieties. Fruit is sourced from the estate vineyard in the Moon Mountain District, as well as from the Dos Limones, Simons, and Rossi Ranch vineyards, all in Sonoma County. The Winery Sixteen 600 Tasting House is a block off the Sonoma Square and features a display of original label art by Stanley Mouse, the Grateful Dead’s album cover artist, and photographs by Susana Millman, the Dead’s longtime photographer, along with a fine record collection to enjoy while tasting the wines.

“Bringing Mayacamas into the company will allow me to spend more time in the vineyards, focusing on the amazing sites we get to farm and guiding new projects,” Coturri said. “I am proud of the success we’ve achieved at Enterprise Vineyards as the only company that does what we do, and for as long as we have done it. I am continually inspired by this work I’ve been exploring for 40-plus years and can’t wait to see what we can do with Mayacamas onboard.”
