Sangiovese and Merlot, Tenuta Luce’s main grape varieties, show an impressive consistency after veraison, an essential condition for a high-quality vintage

Montalcino, Italy, September 9, 2021 – Tenuta Luce, one of Tuscany’s most esteemed wine estates, is pleased to announce the beginning of the harvest operations, which will begin with a delay of approximately 10 days than the average start, due to a rather cool spring which slowed the growth in the vineyards.

The winter 2020 – 2021 was marked by some heavy rainfall, which filled the groundwater reserves without at all hampering the winter pruning operations; the rain favoured the healthy development of cover-cropping in the vineyards and, hence, of biodiversity.  Spring was late, with temperatures lower-than-average, which slowed the bud-break and shoot growth in all the estate vineyards. Temperatures remained well below seasonal average through late June, and cold nights had a positive impact, encouraging canopy growth and cluster development. Flowering and fruit set occurred normally, thanks to the good weather conditions.

The Summer was quite hot, requiring emergency irrigation in younger vineyards. In fact, it is now the estate standard practice to install irrigation when planting new vineyards to cope with the weather extremes typical of climate change.

Post-veraison Merlot and Sangiovese, Tenuta Luce’s main grape varieties, show an impressive consistency, a condition essential for a high-quality harvest. If the weather conditions remain good Merlot will be harvested in late-September and Sangiovese in the second week of October.
