National Geographic Books to Launch the New Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia

Geographical Digest is poised to bring the world of wine to oenophiles with innovative technology

sommjournalAugust 11, 2020 (Los Angeles, Calif.) – The SOMM Journal announced today a first-of-its-kind global wine tasting series, Geographical Digest, in partnership with National Geographic Books. The events, hosted virtually by winemakers from around the world, will broadcast live and be available on demand. A curated collection of some of the wines for each panel will be available for purchase in advance of each event. The launch of the highly anticipated New Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia by National Geographic Books was the catalyst for the innovative approach and synergies among industry leaders in their categories. Enthusiasts can register for the sessions and purchase wines at GeoDigestClub.com.

The SOMM Journal has a respected reputation for bringing industry leaders together in innovative ways and this series of tastings looks to continue that proud tradition,” said Publisher/Editor-in-Chief, Meridith May. “I’m thrilled to be working with such prestigious partners to create something that will be both educational and compelling, and that can be enjoyed by wine lovers around the world.”

For the first time since 2011, National Geographic Books has fully updated The New Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia, the comprehensive guide for oenophiles now in its sixth edition. This essential reference – long used as the go-to text for the prestigious Master Sommelier examination – is the most comprehensive guide to the world of wine, featuring authoritative information on the history, culture, geography, and taste of vintages around the globe.

“The opportunity to collaborate with The SOMM Journal and its strategic partners provides us the ability to reach an even wider and diverse audience. We look forward to sharing The New Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia through virtual wine tastings in which wine lovers from around the country can participate,” said Lisa Thomas, Publisher.

SommCon, one of the leading conferences in the global wine industry, is set to host the series on its on-demand streaming platform called SommGo. The service brings together the best educators and palates in the wine industry alongside enophiles of all levels to learn about the world of wine. “Sharing the Geographical Digest series through our on-demand service opens an exciting viewing opportunity for enthusiasts to learn alongside professionals from winemakers around the globe via a free downloadable bundle that can be viewed either live, or on-demand at the convenience of the audience,” said SommCon and SommGo’s Director Michelle Metter.

The monthly series will begin September 24th, with Unique Regions of the World, followed by October 22: Domestic Bliss – California, Oregon & Washington; November 1: Champagne or Bordeaux – Choose your Passion; December: The Southern Hemisphere – From Down Under to the Top of the Andes; January: An Exploration of Renowned Single Vineyards; February: Technique or Terroir – Is It Production or Nature That Make These Wines Great?; March: Italy – North to South; April: Luxury from Remarkable Sites; May: A World of Bordeaux Blends. The virtual tastings will be held at 9AM PST on the respective dates, and available on demand, at no cost.
