Scheid Continues to Lead and Support Safe and Sustainable Grape Growing in Monterey County

Scheid Family WinesSALINAS, Calif. – (January 2, 2020) ‑ Scheid Family Wines, a highly committed and long supporter of safe and sustainable winegrowing standards, has received GlobalG.A.P. (Good Agricultural Practice) re-certification from SCS Global Services. With a score of 99.4%, Scheid Family Wines is one of the few vineyards in the U.S. to receive this certification.

GlobalG.A.P. is an internationally recognized food safety program designed to support and promote better agricultural practices benchmarked to the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). Additionally, Scheid Family Wines’ 11 estate vineyards, which span approximately 4,000 acres, have been certified by the California Sustainable Wine Growing Alliance since 2014 and many of their vineyard sites are SIP Certified as well. All three programs have rigorous procedures regarding various areas of sustainability, including environmental protection, worker welfare, and responsible energy use.

“This has been one of the most comprehensive audits to date,” said Greg Gonzalez, Director of Vineyard Operations at Scheid Family Wines. “This is a major accomplishment and a grueling task of compliance and certification.”

GlobalG.A.P. addresses environmental sustainability elements that are assessed by a technical auditor. These elements include the development of a waste and pollution action plan, as well as evaluating the impact of farming activities on the environment, such as responsible use of water and enhancing energy efficiency. Scheid Family Wines has demonstrated continued commitment to responsible energy use through the installation of a 1.85 MW wind turbine, which powers the company’s entire winery with 100% renewable energy. The turbine also provides renewable energy to 125 homes in the local community. Scheid Family Wines is the largest U.S. winery to achieve this type of energy independence.
