Gordon Sandstrom Joins Team at Award-Winning Wine Bar-Restaurant

February 2019, Detroit – Vertical Detroit announces that Gordon Sandstrom has been named the wine bar-restaurant’s new General Manager. “We’re thrilled to welcome someone of Gordon’s caliber to our team,” said founder/proprietor Remy Lutfy.

Sandstrom has been in the restaurant industry for the last 24 years, most recently at London Chop House. “Gordon is a superb professional whose expertise in customer service and creating a memorable and magical atmosphere are what drew us to him,” Lutfy adds.

“I’m eager to exceed our customers’ expectations,” commented Sandstrom. Born and raised in Detroit, he explains that “I’m excited to be part of this team and I want to take Vertical to the next level.”

Sandstrom is the father of three and his hobbies include golfing and cooking at home.

Now celebrating its third anniversary, Vertical Detroit is located at 1538 Centre Street in the former Henry Clay Hotel in the Paradise Valley district, located in the heart of downtown Detroit within walking distance of many popular attractions. The historic building was renovated and today is known as The Ashley Apartments.

As a restaurant wine-bar focused on presenting delicious and intriguing food and wine pairings to its customers, the current vertical flights are three vintages each of Dominus Estate from Napa Valley; Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild and Vega Sicilia Tinto Mácan from the Rioja region of Spain; Bodegas y Viñedos Alión Tinto Reserva from the Ribera del Duero region of Spain; Cabernet Sauvignon from Philip Togni Vineyard from Napa Valley and Casaloste Chianti Classico Riserva from Tuscany.

“Offering a diverse choice of vertical flights has been our signature from the day we opened,” explains proprietor Remy Lutfy. “These two choices from California and two choices from Spain are all unusual, small-production wines which should truly delight our guests,” she adds. The vertical flights are chosen by Lutfy in concert with Vertical’s Sommelier Brandon McKay.

Sandstrom’s favorite menu items are the Wolverine Lamb Strip (Toasted Orzo Risotto, Heirloom Carrot, Curried Honey, Pistachio Chèvre Crust), Thai Chili Lavender Braised Duck “Confit” (with Couscous, Haricots Verts, Crispy Skin) and, for dessert, the “Triple Layer Chocolate Ganache (White, Milk and Dark Chocolate Ganache with Orange Butter Sauce and Togarashi Tempura).

Chef Alex Knezevic, a native of Detroit, is committed to quality and the community through his food, most of which is sourced locally from partners such as Great Lakes Coffee, Fairway Packing and Wolverine Packing.

In July 2018 Vertical Detroit was awarded The Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence.

Vertical’s wine list features more than 2,200 vintages by the bottle and 100 by the glass, in addition to the five specific flights. Vertical Detroit presents wines in one of fifteen different types of varietal specific Riedel glassware.

A retail area in the restaurant offers a collection of 2,200 wines in all price points and appellations, in addition to glassware and accessories. Vertical Detroit relies on the Coravin wine preservation units to insure freshness in all of its wines used for by the glass and verticals, and the restaurant also offers the units for sale.
