NAPA VALLEY, LOS CARNEROS, Calif. – September 12, 2018 – Cuvaison winery in Los Carneros is excited to announce that it has named Rob Fischer to the newly created position of small lot and research winemaker. In this position, Fischer will focus on exploring the character and diversity of unique blocks within Cuvaison’s renowned 200-acre Los Carneros estate vineyard. Fischer will work alongside acclaimed winemaker, Steve Rogstad, who has guided Cuvaison’s wine making program since 2002. In collaboration with Rogstad, Fischer will oversee Cuvaison’s Small Lot and Micro Lot wines, as well as the Legacy wines, which are named after members of the Schmidheiny family, which owns Cuvaison. Fischer will also be responsible for managing Cuvaison’s research program in areas such as yeast trials, irrigation, clonal and rootstock material, and new viticultural and vinification techniques. As part of a major investment in talent and resources at Cuvaison under President and CEO Dan Zepponi, Fischer’s appointment follows the recent announcement of Scott McLeod as Cuvaison’s consulting winemaker and Kelly Maher as consulting viticulturist.

An expert at working with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Los Carneros, Fischer began his career at Domaine Carneros and Ancien Wines, before joining the team at Etude Wines. At Etude, Fischer served as associate winemaker, and had the opportunity to work alongside winemaking luminaries Tony Soter and John Priest. In the years since, Fischer has held positions as the winemaker at Lyric and Beaulieu Vineyard, and most recently as the director of winemaking operations at Banshee Wines.

“Rob is an incredibly talented winemaker, with a deep understanding of our region’s terroir, and what makes wines from Los Carneros so exceptional,” says Cuvaison Winemaker Steve Rogstad. “As a small, family-owned winery, the addition of Rob to our team, along with Scott and Kelly, makes a powerful statement about our absolute commitment to quality, and our desire to make the most exceptional wines possible from our estate. Not only is there an incredible sense of energy and direction here at Cuvaison, we are being given all of the resources we need to make the finest wines in our long history.”

In addition to making small-lot wines using estate fruit from Cuvaison’s 200-acre Los Carneros vineyard, Fischer will also be working with grapes from other renowned winegrowing sites to produce limited-production Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays for the Cuvaison portfolio. While Fischer will primarily be focusing on Cuvaison, he will also collaborate with Rogstad, McLeod and Maher on the viticulture and winemaking program at Brandlin Vineyard on Mount Veeder, which is also owned by Cuvaison Estate Wines.
