Korbel hosts highly-anticipated signature events with sports and entertainment icons to raise funds for charity

July 2, 2018 – Korbel California Champagne® will once again sponsor and hold signature events at this year’s American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, July 10-15 in Lake Tahoe. Thousands of fans will join together with sports and entertainment stars to raise a glass – and funds for charity – both on and off the course with Korbel’s highly-anticipated, signature events. Activities include the fan-favorite Celebrity Spray-Off and the annual Closest-to-the-Pin contest, with $250,000 riding on the winning title. Players and spectators will toast festivities with the tournament’s signature “Korbel Sparkling Eagle” cocktail, while soaking in the backdrop of picturesque Lake Tahoe.

“At Korbel, we always look forward to the celebratory traditions we’ve established in partnership with the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship,” said Gary Heck, Korbel owner and president. “The reason for these events remains the same – bringing people together to raise money for a good cause. Through the Korbel Toast Life® Foundation, we’ve touched dozens of organizations over the course of our sponsorship, and look forward to supporting causes that mean so much to us at Korbel, as well as the celebrities who take part in our events.”

Tournament-goers and celebrities will have various opportunities to participate in the excitement, including:

Celebrity Spray-Off: As sports and entertainment superstars make their way to the 18th tee, Korbel will challenge players to demonstrate their best champagne-popping skills as part of the annual Celebrity Spray-Off, taking place on Thursday, July 12. Participants will have an opportunity to win $5,000 for a charity of their choice, courtesy of the Korbel Toast Life®Foundation. Korbel will judge participants on champagne spray creativity as well as cork distance. Last year, the Celebrity Spray-Off attracted more than 40 contestants all vying for the winning title, including two-time champion, Rascal Flatts’ Jay DeMarcus and runner up, MLB All-Star Pitcher Derek Lowe.

Celebrity Closest-to-the-Pin Challenge: $250,000 is on the line during this seventh-annual contest that brings together 15 of the tournament’s most popular personalities to compete in the Korbel Closest-to-the-Pin Challenge. If a contestant makes a hole-in-one, the $250,000 grand prize will be split with $125,000 going home with the celebrity and $125,000 donated to this year’s Tahoe-based charity – SOS Outreach. If a player gets within two-feet of the hole, a $25,000 prize will be split between the winning celebrity and the charity. If no player makes a hole-in-one, contestants will be ranked based on distance to the pin, with the shortest distance earning $5,000 for charity. The contest takes place Friday, July 13 on hole 17 after the first round of play.

Celebratory Signature Cocktail: Korbel pays tribute to the Celebrity Closest-to-the-Pin contest with an official drink, the “Korbel Sparkling Eagle.” Reflecting the spirit of Lake Tahoe, the “Korbel Sparkling Eagle” features Korbel California Champagne, lemonade, and melon liqueur and is served in a lowball glass with a large maraschino cherry garnish at the bottom, representing the hole-in-one.

Celebrating Responsibly:  In partnership with TEAM Coalition, Korbel is once again challenging tournament fans to sign a responsibility pledge that outlines ways in which to celebrate responsibly.  Everyone who attends the event plays an important role by drinking responsibly, behaving respectfully, and always having a designated driver.  On Thursday and Friday of tournament play, fans can sign a large oversized golf ball near the 18th tee to show their support.
