The historic Sonoma County winery invites guests to learn through interactive displays and a five-course wine and food pairing

HEALDSBURG, Calif. (June 18, 2018) – Ted Seghesio, fourth generation winemaker at Seghesio Family Vineyards, is pleased to introduce the new Old Vine Cellar Flight, a unique offering which blends wine tasting with a hands-on educational program designed to highlight the storied past of the winery and its exceptional Old Vines.  The Old Vine Cellar Flight, which takes place in the cellar of California’s 56th Bonded Winery, builds upon Seghesio Family Vineyards’ position as a leader in the stewardship of Old Vines and its esteemed portfolio of wines.

“We are thrilled to welcome guests to take part in the new Old Vine Cellar Flight, a unique showcase of our treasured Old Vines which are the foundation of Seghesio Family Vineyards,” said Ted Seghesio. “Old Vine Zinfandel from Russian River Valley is becoming more of a rarity, and our goal is to show that these vines are not exceptional because they are old, they are old because they have proven themselves exceptional over time.”

Guests are invited to step into the winery’s cellar to discover Seghesio’s rich heritage rooted in Sonoma County winegrowing. Tucked away in an intimate alcove amidst large redwood tanks and Old Vine Zinfandel displays, guests can relax comfortably in a lounge while enjoying a curated flight of current Old Vine releases and treasured library vintages complemented by small bites crafted by the winery’s Executive Chef Peter Janiak.  The Old Vine wine flight and tasting menu change with the seasons and tell the story of how Old Vines personify the Seghesio Family in their perseverance, character and sense of place.

The star of the show is an actual Old Vine from Block 5 of the family’s original Home Ranch vineyard that was planted in 1895. The vine is suspended from the ceiling and hovers above three distinct soil samples to that guests can easily see the vine’s structure and root system. What makes Old Vines special is that their rootstock limits them naturally, producing smaller berried clusters and lower yields, while expending less energy on vegetation. They’re also deep-rooted, sometimes digging down 15 feet to find moisture. The result is exceptional fruit with structured tannins, vibrant acidity and briary spiced characteristics. Those elements shine through in the Old Vine wine flights. Guests will savor age-worthy wines with persistent length and textural richness unique to Old Vines.

Seghesio Family Vineyards is known for producing critically-acclaimed Zinfandel that honors the history of Sonoma and the Seghesio family heritage. Seghesio’s history in Sonoma dates back to 1895, when Italian immigrant Edoardo Seghesio planted his first vineyard, which became what is now known as Home Ranch, located in northern Alexander Valley.  Today, Seghesio Family Vineyards is proud to produce wines from over 300 acres of vineyards across renowned Zinfandel appellations in Sonoma, including the vineyards that Edoardo first planted in the late 1800’s.

The Old Vine Cellar Flight is open to the public by appointment only and available Friday through Sunday.  The tasting is offered at $40 per guest and $25 per guest for Centennial Club Members and lasts approximately 60 minutes.
