GLEN ELLEN, CA June 6, 2018– Loxton Cellars in Sonoma County California is proud to announce they are the first winery in the USA to own an Expleco Glass to Sand machine.  Chris Loxton, owner and winemaker at Loxton Cellars has been concerned for years about the number of wine bottles that go into landfills.  These bottles can take decades to degrade and take up an enormous amount space. When Mr. Loxton heard of a small machine that could grind a wine bottle down to the consistency of beach sand, he immediately reached out to the company.  Originally designed for cruise ships, the Expleco precision machine reduces a glass bottle to fine sand in a matter of 3 seconds.  Loxton Cellars will be using the sand to help improve the clay soils in the vineyard and for landscaping projects.

Chris Loxton said the winery had been saving glass in anticipation of its arrival and put it to work the first day. Each 5-gallon bucket of ground glass represents 50 wine bottles kept out of the local landfill. “We all need to find ways to reduce our carbon footprint and as a 4th generation grower, I feel very strongly about being a good steward to the land. This machine not only is helping to keep glass out the landfills, it’s helping my vineyard and quite frankly, it’s the right thing to do.”

ABOUT CHRIS LOXTON AND LOXTON CELLARS

Loxton Cellars is a working winery surrounded by 5 acres of estate vineyard in Sonoma County. Chris Loxton, is a 4th generation grower, but the first in his family to be a winemaker. Originally South Australia, Mr. Loxton grew up on a vineyard and decided to be a winemaker sometime during high school but a PhD in physics interrupted this dream.  After 8 years as a research Scientist at the University of Illinois Materials Research Lab in Champaign Urbana, he decided to change careers and follow his dream.  With over 25 harvests under his belt, his emphasis has remained on handmade wines, made without compromise, from some of Sonoma’s best vineyards. The winery and vineyard are set up so that visitors may see all operations from grape to glass. Visitors can also book Vineyard Walkabout tours on the weekends or Reserve Tastings for an educational experience that connects the vineyard, farming and production methods and the resultant wine.  Loxton Cellars produces 3000 cases annually and the wines are only available at the winery, online, and select local restaurants.
